希望的种子：新冠疫苗“破土发芽”

Seed of hope: COVID-19 vaccine trials begin

在当下新冠肺炎疫情不断蔓延，威胁多个国家和地区的时候，疫苗的出现无疑是一个值得期待的好消息。日前，中国研制的新冠病毒疫苗已经开始了I期临床试验，并于3月16日注射进志愿者体内。

As the COVID-19 pandemic rages, threateningcountries and regions around the world, progress in developing a vaccine isdefinitely good news. Currently, China has commenced a Phase I clinical trial for a COVID-19 vaccine, with volunteers receiving it on March 16.

这支疫苗叫做重组新冠病毒疫苗（腺病毒载体），其原理是对病毒进行“手术”，改造出一个我们需要的载体病毒，注入人体产生免疫，是目前五条疫苗研制技术路线中的一种。经过三期临床试验，如果一切顺利并最终证明有效，预计疫苗最快半年后能够上市。

The principle of developing this recombinant novel coronavirus vaccine(adenovirus vector) is to "perform surgery"on the virus and develop the necessary adenovirus, which will trigger an immuneresponse when injected into the body. This is one of five approaches in developinga vaccine that is currently underway. Once proves effectiveafter three phases of clinical trials, the vaccine is expected to be available for the public in aslittle as six months’ time.

关于中国的首个新冠疫苗，我们想跟大家分享几个故事。

I would like to share a few stories about China's first domestically developed novel coronavirus vaccine.

此次，成功研制出该疫苗的科研团队领头人是中国工程院院士陈薇。

The vaccine is being developed by a research team led by Chen Wei,an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, who has been hailed as a "virusterminator."

这位人们眼中的“病毒克星”，曾在埃博拉疫情暴发时，远赴塞拉利昂安营扎寨，研发出中国首个、世界第三个进入临床的埃博拉疫苗。

Having previously traveled to SierraLeone during the Ebola outbreak, she developed China's first homegrownvaccine for the virus, making China the third country to put an Ebola vaccineinto clinical trials.

当地医务工作者兴奋地把陈薇抛向空中，庆祝埃博拉疫苗在非洲开展临床试验取得成功。

1月24日是中国的除夕夜，中国疾控中心成功分离中国首株新型冠状病毒毒种，为疫苗的开发奠定了基础。两天后，陈薇团队赶赴武汉疫区，争分夺秒地开展研究，经过两个月的奋战，开发出了重组新冠疫苗，采用的正是与埃博拉疫苗相同的技术。

On Jan. 24, Chinese New Year's Eve, the Chinese Center forDisease Control and Prevention successfully isolated the first strain of thenovel coronavirus, laying the foundation for developing a vaccine. Two dayslater, Chen's team rushedto the epicenter of Wuhan to carry out further research. After two months ofhard work, they developed the recombinant novel coronavirus vaccine, using the same technology as was used for the Ebola vaccine.

武汉市民李明（化名）是报名参加I期临床试验的志愿者。此前，他的妻子不幸感染新冠肺炎。经历了恐惧与无助，现在妻子痊愈，李明希望以疫苗测试志愿者的身份再做些事情，算是对社会的一点点回馈。

Wuhan resident Li Ming (apseudonym) volunteered to participate in the Phase I clinical trial. Previously,his wife was unfortunately infected with COVID-19, which led him to fear and helplessness.Now that his wife has recovered, Li wanted to give back to society by volunteering for the trial.

志愿者秦媛媛是一名年仅19岁的“00后”女孩。她说，看到全国那么多“90后”医务工作者奋战在一线，她作为一名00后，也想用自己的行动帮助家乡抗击疫情。

Another volunteer, Qin Yuanyuan, is only 19 years old.She explained that it was seeing so many young medical workers across thecountry fighting on the frontlines that inspired her to do her bit to help herhometown fight the epidemic.

据了解，重组新冠疫苗I期临床试验需要的志愿者不过108人，然而报名的却达到几千人。

It has been reported that Phase I of the clinical trialwas designed for just 108 volunteers, but several thousand people signed up totake part.

在对抗病毒的战场上，科研人员与死神较量，与时间赛跑，中国五条技术路线的疫苗攻关均有快速进展，美国几乎与中国同时开启新冠疫苗临床试验，英、加、德等国也在加紧研发；而那些被保护的普通人，也在勇敢探路，为抗击疫情贡献着一份力。

On the battlefield against the virus, scientificresearchers are competing against time and death. China's five different approaches to developing vaccines have so far all made rapidprogress. The United States started clinical trials at almost the same time asChina, and the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany andother countries have also been stepping up research. The ordinary people whoare being protected are also bravely contributing to the fight against theepidemic.

疫苗的“破土发芽”为人类终结新冠病毒带来了期盼，而这些迫切的努力和团结的力量，更是人类战胜疫情的希望。

The COVID-19 vaccine is a seed of hope for humanity,and one which is showing positive signs. In addition, these urgent efforts and strength of unity are also a hope that the world will overcome this pandemic.
