All Miseries Begin with the Discriminating Mind

Some people only pay attention to whether their actions and speech are pure and only care about whether their external manner is appropriate.

But they overlook their inner intentions and thoughts.

This is like only washing your face and taking a bath, but never knowing to cleanse the spirit.

In this world, the discriminating mind has brought us infinite suffering.

Take craving, for example.

When a man loves a woman and joins with her in marriage, initially he finds her beauty to be unparalleled.

But after a time, his interest in her wanes, and eventually he no longer finds her lovable at all. Then he starts to pursue other women.

In fact, the woman he previously adored and the wife he now detests are one and the same.

This dramatic difference between his past and present attitudes is due entirely to the trickery of his discriminating mind.

Yet once this deluded discriminating mind exists, the person drifts like a cotton thread in the wind,

seeking A today, liking B tomorrow.

In the end, he will regard the beauty he eventually finds as too ordinary.

Just think—if beauty truly had a solid, unchangeable nature, then this man could not have undergone such an enormous transformation over time.

Once you like someone, you would like that person forever, and the rest of the world would feel the same way you do.

But this is not the way it is.

One man finds a particular woman exceptionally charming and breathtaking, yet other men view her as rather unremarkable.

These are the different expressions of discriminating mind.

Here is another instance: humans are universally disgusted by feces and view them as impure and filthy, yet to pigs and dogs they are a rare delicacy.

All judgments of beautiful or foul, good or bad, are derived from living beings’ discriminating minds at a particular moment.
