A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY

- A Pilgrimage on the Silk Road, Photographs and Video by Lisa Ross

What photography means to a photographer in today's advanced digital world? Photography is my second language, quoted by Gary Kapluggin.

Photography is spiritual transformation to me, said by Lisa Ross.

Lisa Ross was born in Brooklyn, NY, to a secular Jewish family with a mother who was a painter and father a writer. Lisa was exposed to the arts and theater as a child. At 12 years old, she had chance to use a camera, when she looked through the lens and pushed the shutter release she knew that that moment, she found her life long passion, she found her language. Using her talent and creativity Lisa built a darkroom in her basement and began the journey. At 13 she walked into an old age home on the boardwalk and began to make portraits of Holocaust survivors and had them tell their stories into a tape recorder. As a teenager, photography became part of her identity. She could earn money selling her photographs, and apprenticed with a commercial photographer. Yet, Lisa found herself in great confusion and pain as she realized something was wrong and that she was very different from her friends. She used photography as a life preserver and expressed her feelings through art as she slowly came to terms with her sexuality. Later, in her 20’s she developed a photography program and was funded to work with high risk youth who were struggling gay/lesbian/trans teenagers in New York, often rejected by their families and homeless. Here, photography became a healing process for many youth who could tell their own stories by borrowing cameras, learning to work in the darkroom, and installing exhibitions.

After focusing her photography on life in New York and on her own community, family and friends, Lisa made the decision to leave and see if she could make intimate and meaningful work in a place and with a people that were not her own. She chose North Africa as her first destination and traveled across Morocco. She was consumed by the landscapes, the vast desert and it’s deafening silence, and was moved by people, the market places and the invitations she received to sit and spend time on roadsides, in homes around food and in market places.

Graduating from Columbia University, School of the Arts at with a Masters degree, Ross went back to the Sahara and then Sinai, she was on a creative journey and a spiritual search. Lisa developed her own concept of photography, that she describes as a Portrait of Landscape. Her large black and white mural prints described ephemeral spaces and a timelessness. In the past, she had taken many actual portraits desiring to convey how the camera could bring someone closer, how it could create intimacy, rather than being a shield between herself and others. Perhaps, the influence of her mother's portrait painting and her father’s storytelling were inevitable.

In 2002, Lisa had an opportunity to visit to China. Instead of visiting the modern cities in China she chose to take the slow train directly to Xinjiang. As part of the ancient Silk Road that she read about, she not only indulged herself by the endless desert, but walked into the faith and rituals practiced by the local people, and in time learned about the history of the region. It was at then that Ross’s work shifted from analogue to digital, from black and white to color. Their holy sites spoke to Ross in color. The handmade markers people created and placed in the desert and in the pilgrimage sites were so specifically about color. The contrast between the horizontal starkness of the desert and the verticality of the markers was also significant to Ross who describes these as manifestations of faith.

Lisa continued to return to this region and develop her vision. Over a decade she created valuable photographic and video work, revolving around the liminal spaces in which faith, culture and abstraction meet. A Pilgrimage on the Silk Road leads us to deep contemplation, which reflects not only the artists respect toward their faith, but an affection towards humanity and their belief.

Photography does not give answers, but raises question. The question from Lisa's work is actually about the ultimate issue of human beings and the cycle of life and death. Through each experiment in life again and again, the artist seeks the answer.
