Somali Militants Take Hostages, Kill One After U.N. Helicopter Makes Forced Landing

From: The Wall Street Journal

Several people were captured and at least one killed Wednesday when a United Nations helicopter made a forced landing in a militant-controlled area of Somalia, according to reports from the Somali military viewed by The Wall Street Journal.

Col. Deo Akiiki, the deputy spokesman for the Ugandan military, which has troops deployed in Somalia as part of an African Union mission, confirmed that a U.N. helicopter set down in hostile territory. Early Somali military reports circulating among diplomats and viewed by the Journal said that the downed aircraft was encircled by insurgents from al-Shabaab, one of the world’s most-active al Qaeda affiliates, and that one person on board was killed.

One official said that the aircraft had experienced mechanical issues. Two senior European officials described the situation as a hostage-taking and reported that Somali government forces were responding to the scene in Galmudug state, in central Somalia.

Among the nine people aboard were two Kenyan medics, a Ugandan soldier, a Somali officer and an Egyptian doctor, who was killed by the militants, the Somali military reports said. Akiiki, the Ugandan military spokesman, said he didn’t have information on whether a Ugandan soldier had been captured in the incident.

The United Nations set up an emergency task force to respond to the crisis, according to one senior European official.

Officials said there were no Europeans or Americans aboard, but the reports didn’t immediately identify the nationalities of the two civilian pilots, engineer and flight attendant.

A diplomat in the region said the helicopter belonged to the U.N. Support Office for Somalia, which provides medical and logistical support to thousands of African Union troops deployed to combat al-Shabaab.

Somali authorities have been fighting al-Shabaab insurgents for nearly two decades, and last year launched a major offensive that recaptured scores of villages and towns in the center of the country.

The U.S. began sending commandos to help Somali troops fight al-Shabaab in 2007. American special-operations troops based in the country, strategically situated on Africa’s eastern tip, advise Somali commandos during combat missions. American drones conduct airstrikes when local forces find themselves in danger of being overrun.
