Anhui man detained for naming dog “city management official”

Shanghaiist Shanghaiist 2019-05-21

In China, you really have to be careful when choosing a pet’s name.

A 31-year-old dog breeder, surnamed Ban, from the Anhui city of Fuyang got into some trouble with the law recently for naming two of his dogs “city management official” (chengguan 城管) and “traffic warden” (xieguan 协管), and playfully sharing this fact on social media with posts about chengguan stealing shoes and getting into fights with xieguan.

Chengguan are the most-hated of all Chinese public officials, tasked with tackling low-level crime in urban areas and infamous for the sometimes vicious way that they deal with street vendors, leading to casualties on both sides.

While Ban claimed to have just chosen the dog names for a bit of “fun,” local authorities did not see the humor in the names. On Monday, Ban was summoned and placed under administrative detention for 10 days for “provoking trouble.”
