The intro

(Listening Comprehension)

Yo, what up fam?(俚语:= family) It's Chinese New Year baby! It's time to binge watch TV(放纵地看电视) and play King of Glory(电玩游戏), aww yeah! Speaking of Chinese New Year, do you guys know why everything is in red during New Year? Before we talk about the phrase of the day, let me tell you a story, here we go:

According to tales and legends, the beginning of the Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical(神话的) beast called Nian(年兽), which had the body of a bull and the head of a lion. It was said to be a ferocious(凶猛的) animal that lived in the mountains and hunted for a living. Towards the end of winter when there was nothing to eat, Nian would come on the first day of New Year to the villages to eat livestock, crops, and even villagers, especially children.

One year, all the villagers decided to hide from the beast. An old man appeared before the villagers went into hiding. He said to the villagers, "I'm gonna stay the night and get revenge on the Nian, you feel me son?(俚语:你懂我的意思吗?年轻人) All the villagers thought he was insane. The old man put red papers up and set off firecrackers.(鞭炮) The day after, the villagers came back to their town to see that nothing was destroyed. They assumed that the old man was a deity(神仙) who came to save them. The villagers then understood that the Nian was afraid of the color red and loud noises. When the New Year was about to come, the villagers would wear red clothes, hang red lanterns, and red spring scrolls(春联、对联 also: spring couplets) on windows and doors. People also used firecrackers to frighten away the Nian. From then on, Nian never came back to the village again. The end! Pretty interesting, huh? Okay, let's talk about our phrase of the upcoming year of the pig, which is "pig out", let's check it out!
