The principal investigator is looking for a full-time Research Assistant to support some language acquisition projects starting in July 2020, ideally leading to a PhD after 12 months of Research Assistant appointment.

Expected Duties

The appointee will assist the project "Assessing the Narrative and Lexical Abilities of Urdu-Cantonese Bilingual Preschool Children in Hong Kong: Establishing Groundwork on Their School and Community Language (Cantonese) Abilities for Improving the Differentiation of South Asian Ethnic Minority Children with and without Language Impairments" and projects related to speech and language comprehension and production in Cantonese-speaking pre-school- and school- aged children with and without Developmental Language Disorder. He/She will assist the project leader and work in our research team on studies investigating speech and language processing in monolingual and bilingual Cantonese-speaking children and adults. 

The studies involve experimental and corpus investigations of children and adults’ speech and language comprehension and production (involving assessments such as eye-tracking sentence comprehension task, elicited sentence imitation and production, narrative comprehension and production tasks, lexical comprehension and production tasks, non-word repetition tasks, working memory tasks, hearing screening, and non-verbal IQ test). 

He/ She will be required to: 

(a) assist in participant recruitment, data collection, transcription and coding, and data analysis; and

(b) perform any other duties as assigned by the project leader or his/ her delegates.

Qualifications

Applicants should:

“

be a dedicated graduate holding a Bachelor’s (or higher) degree in Linguistics, Speech Therapy, Psychology or a related discipline (preferably with a solid background in language acquisition and psycholinguistics);

be a native or near-native speaker of Cantonese

preferably have experience in administering experimental studies to preschool- and school- aged children and adults

ideally desire to pursue further study (PhD or MA/Master of Speech Therapy) and would like to accrue some related research experience before starting her/his further study (PhD opportunity is available at the Department under the supervision of the project leader and her local and overseas collaborators from internationally leading research institutes/centers)
