早在乔叟时代，adamant就已进入英语，它源自希腊语adamas（最坚硬的金属），借自古法语adamaunt（最坚硬的石头）。因此，有好几个世纪，adamant一直被人作为diamond（金刚石）的同义词使用，这两个单词本身也属于同源词。到了20世纪40年代，adamant则开始被广泛用作形容词，表示“坚硬的、坚决的、固执的”。
