有关注牛津词典年度词汇的小伙伴应该对 toxic 一词比较熟悉了，因为它是牛津词典2018年的年度词汇。该词源自希腊语 toxon （弓箭），由于在古希腊时期，带弓箭的战士会在他们的箭尖上抹毒药，后来便从 toxon 发展出了希腊语 toxikon （用在箭上的毒药），进而进入拉丁语形成 toxicum （毒药）以及 toxicus （有毒的）。

再经法语 toxique 或者直接经拉丁语 toxicus 进入英语后，就有了 toxic 一词，也是用来表示“有毒的、毒性的、引起中毒的”，尤指含有能够致人死亡或严重衰弱的有毒物质，常用在有毒废物（toxic waste）、有毒气体（toxic gases）、有毒杀虫剂（toxic pesticides）等与人居环境或人身健康相关的表达中，比如：
