在美国一个广受欢迎的万圣节传统是一家人在一起观看《这是南瓜大王哦! 查理·布朗!》（It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown）的节目。
这是一个从1966年开播的时长25分钟的动画片，里面有史努比、查理·布朗和花生帮的孩子们。
《花生漫画》系列在1950 - 2000年之间一直连载，现在重播至今。他们的假日电影特辑仍然非常受欢迎。

when you don't get what you want

Another Halloween is upon us, with all its trappings of fright and fear, costumes and parties, ritual and revelry. Children are always excited to go trick-or-treating, in hopes to get the most candy they can. And then adults young and old love to dress up in costumes, hoping to impress their admirers with their creativity.

Ghosts are a common Halloween icon, appearing in many home decorations. Ghost costumes are also easy to make, as you need only take a sheet, cut out holes for your eyes, and put it over your head. Ghost-themed movies are also popular during the season. For example, Sixth Sense explores how ghosts are people who roam the earth with unfinished business.
Halloween (from All Hallows' Eve) is part of a larger set of holidays related to the dead, All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. In the Christian tradition, we honor saints and the souls of our departed loved ones, through God, on these holidays.
Another popular Halloween symbol is the pumpkin. Along with apples and corn, pumpkins are ubiquitous in the fall, with many people using them for decorations inside and outside their homes this time of year. They symbolize the autumn’s harvest. In the ancient Celtic tradition, pumpkins were hollowed out and carved into jack-o-lanterns to guide good spirits home.
Although Halloween today is known for its fun, it can also come with disappointment. When I give out candy to trick-or-treaters, it seems that for every “thank you” I receive from one child, I receive an “I don’t like that—can you give me something else?” from another. Adults return from parties elated from a good time, despondent over a bad time, or just hungover.
Like anything in life, things are great when they work out, like when we get the candy or have a great time at a party. But often times things don’t work out the way we like. One classic American Halloween cartoon film explores disappointment in a humorous, but insightful, way.
A widespread American Halloween ritual is for the entire family to watch It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.
A 25-minute cartoon from 1966 featuring Snoopy, Charlie Brown, and the children of the Peanuts gang.
The Peanuts comic series ran from 1950-2000, with reruns continuing to this day. Their holiday film specials remain incredibly popular.
Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang are embedded in American culture. Last Thanksgiving, I introduced you to them along with another classic cartoon film, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. That movie is a heartwarming tale about gratitude and friendship, and how many life blessings are often neglected or unappreciated.
In It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown's neighbor Linus believes in a Great Pumpkin that will rise up and fly through the air on Halloween night, bringing him lots presents. He diligently cultivates a pumpkin patch to attract the Great Pumpkin to visit him. While the others go trick-or-treating and partying, Linus stays behind to sit vigil in his pumpkin patch.
To Linus, the Great Pumpkin is something big to believe in. The other children do not believe in the Great Pumpkin, but do believe in Santa Claus. Linus finds this inconsistent, and he prides himself on being sincere in his beliefs. He believed in the power of vision.
As Linus gets ready for Halloween, the others laugh at him. Charlie Brown tells Linus he “must be crazy” for believing in something that is not true. Snoopy laughs hysterically. Linus's sister Lucy is angry and embarrassed, saying Linus's belief makes her “the laughingstock of the neighborhood,” and she orders him to abandon his belief. Another friend Patty says it’s all fake.
Linus was alone in his belief, as often are we in our lives. Every time you try to improve, someone will say you can’t. If you want to start a business, others will tell you there are too many risks. If you want to study abroad, someone will say that your English isn’t good enough. If you try to grow beyond your friends, they may manipulate you to keep you where they want you.
Linus was undaunted by the taunts of others. While his friends were out having fun, he stayed behind in his pumpkin patch. Linus suggested the others were hypocrites by wearing masks and dressing up in costumes, whereas he was being true to himself. Even though the Great Pumpkin is in fact fake, Linus felt that it was the others who were being fake in all their revelry.
Sometimes you will be mocked for going your own way. It's bad enough when people don’t share your enthusiasm, but even worse when they mock you. Those can be very trying times when your faith will be tested. Linus just turned a blind eye to it, staying focused on his own passion to see the Great Pumpkin, the one truly big thing he believed in.
In It's the Great Pumpkin, there are lots of disappointments. When Charlie Brown went trick-or-treating with his friends, he received rocks while the others received candy, gum, cookies, coins, and popcorn. To get a rock for Halloween is like getting coal in your Christmas stocking, meaning that you have not been good this year and receive rocks and coal as punishment.

Snoopy, who dressed up for Halloween as a World War I Flying Ace, went on an imaginary battle to shoot down the legendary German fighter Red Baron. He converts his doghouse into a Sopwith Camel plane and shoots at enemy planes. Despite all of his improvisation and ingenuity in this battle, Snoopy loses, with his “plane” being shot down over enemy territory.

After trick-or-treating, the gang bobs for apples at a Halloween party, trying to take apples floating in a barrel of water out by biting them and not using their hands. Lucy makes an attempt, but to her dismay, pulls out an apple that Snoopy had already bitten into. She was disgusted by coming into such close contact with a dog.
But perhaps the greatest disappointment came to Linus. After his long and hope-filled vigil, the Great Pumpkin never appeared. At 4:00 am, his sister Lucy went out to find him asleep in the pumpkin patch, shivering under his thin blanket. She brought him in and put him to bed. Despite her earlier ridicule, she should at least get credit for not leaving a loved one behind!
None of the characters let their disappointments get them down. Charlie Brown was unhappy with the bag full of rocks, but he enjoyed being with his friends. Snoopy wanted to shoot down the Red Baron, but just joined the Halloween party, knowing he would have another chance in the future. Lucy was sore that she didn’t get a good apple, but she just returned to the party.

Linus had a different way of moving on. In an effort to console Linus, Charlie Brown admits that he has also done a lot of stupid things in his life. But Linus reacts strongly and yells, “Stupid? What do you mean ‘stupid’? Just wait till next year, Charlie Brown.” Linus promised that next year he’ll sit in the pumpkin patch again until the Great Pumpkin appears. He kept up his hope.
We all have dealt with situations where we didn't get what we wanted. We may have ordered a favorite dish at a restaurant, but that time it wasn’t made right. We tried to earn a good grade, but it didn’t work out. We tried to win a contest or raffle, but lost. We tried to improve a relationship, but failed. From big to small, disappointment is a way of life.
It’s the Great Pumpkin teaches us disappointment comes when we have something big to believe in. When others don’t share your enthusiasm for something, you can understand their views but make your own independent judgment. When you are mocked for going your own way, call upon your own vision and self-worth to fortify you against the negative voices.

My friend, belief and disappointment are two sides of the same coin. That you are disappointed in something means that you believe in something larger. Linus’s belief in the Great Pumpkin overrode all of the ridicule of the others. Place your disappointment in the context of your larger belief, keep the faith, and let this positive perspective help you through it.
