Background

In response to the Sahel crisis, the United Nations adopted the United Nations Integrated Strategy for the Sahel (SINUS) in June 2013, which focuses on three strategic objectives: (i) Promoting inclusive governance throughout the region; (ii) The development of national and regional security mechanisms capable of dealing with cross-border threats; (iii) Integrating humanitarian and development interventions to ensure long-term resilience. Three regional working groups, corresponding to the three strategic objectives, have been set up to identify and implement relevant activities at national and regional level.
UNDP coordinates the Regional Working Group on Governance of SINUS. In this regard, he has worked with UN agencies to define priority areas for intervention in the area of governance, namely: support for reform of electoral systems, support for judicial reform and, in close collaboration with the Regional Security Working Group, supporting communities living in cross-border areas to combat insecurity and violent extremism.
 In addition, UNDP has defined a strategic approach for the Sahel based on the objectives of the "SINUS" and its comparative advantages: its neutrality, its commitment to sustainable human development, its role in coordinating partners' interventions. development, its presence in all the countries of the region and its organization as a network of knowledge.
Thus, the UNDP Strategy in the Sahel for the period 2014
- 2017 is based on five (5) strategic axes of intervention:
Support to democratic governance and governance in the security sector, the rule of law, and civil society watch capacities.

Improvement of regional economic and security cooperation.Strengthening the strategic functions of development and contributing to poverty reduction.Strengthening resilience mechanisms and capacities.Promotion of communication and better sharing of knowledge on the Sahel
 


Duties and Responsibilities

Core Responsabilities

Research and Data Management:

To explore and generate technical inputs to the Sahel programme in Monitoring, Communications and programme management support.To support the development frameworks and indicators on governance, peace and security and recovery;Perform policy-oriented research on governance, peace and security, economic governance, local governance and gender in the Sahel Region;Compile literature reviews on issues related to governance, peace and security, human rights and gender in the Sahel Region;Assist in preparing for events and staff travel pertaining to the Sahel Programme;Undertake research related to donor intelligence both at regional and country levels.

Knowledge Management and Communication :

Draft, review and edit concepts notes, knowledge products and presentations;Review and shape resources mobilization and partnership concepts;Participate in meetings and perform other support tasks as required.Collect data and prepare a bibliography/catalogue of the Sahel Programme: research all reports, analysis, etc. done by the Programme to be uploaded as a repository accessible to all.

The more specific focus will be decided in consultation with the intern taking into account his/her skills development interests.

Required Skills and Experience

Education
Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Experience

Computer literate in standard software applications;Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the UN, and of UNDP in particular, and have a personal commitment to UNDP's Statement of Purpose? and to the ideals of the UN Charter;Demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Language

Proficiency in both French and English  is a requirement

Conditions of the internship:

UNDP will not pay for the internship; all expenses connected with it will be borne by the intern;UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;Interns are responsible for securing adequate medical insurance for the duration of their internship with UNDP and must provide a medical certificate of good health prior to starting the internship. UNDP will not reimburse the medical insurance of the intern. Any costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship assignment will be the responsibility of the intern;All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institutions;The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship;Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.Applicants should indicate which months they are available part- and/or full time and when they complete their studies.
