Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Public Affairs Section, Office of the Chief of Staff, Department of Peacekeeping Operations and Department of Field Support.  The incumbent will report to the Deputy, Public Affairs Section.

The internship is for an initial period of three months, with an opportunity for extension up to a total period of six months, depending on the needs of the Service. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.                

Responsibilities


- Assist the Public Affairs Section with strategic communication and public outreach; 
- Assist in developing graphic design and multimedia products for web and social networking platforms;
- Assist in developing content management and development of UN Peacekeeping stories and information to increase awareness and understanding of UN Peacekeeping issues by key audiences through social media channels, including Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook and Instagram; 
- Assist with drafting and editing UN Peacekeeping publications (e.g. fact sheets, brochures, newsletters and donor-related updates) for internal and external sources; 
-Design and produce UN Peacekeeping presentations and supporting materials to increase UN Peacekeeping visibility and outreach; 
- Proactively contribute suggestions and ideas for design projects that will add value to UN Peacekeeping;
- Perform any other duties as requested by the supervisor.

•Professionalism: Knowledge of the full range of communications approaches, tools, and methodologies essential to planning and executing effective campaign strategies and programmes, e.g. campaign management, media operations, marketing and promotion, audience outreach, message targeting. Ability to rapidly analyze and integrate diverse information from varied sources. Ability to identify public affairs issues, opportunities and risks in an international environment. Ability to diplomatically handle sensitive situations with target audiences and cultivate productive relationships. Knowledge of relevant internal policies and business activities/issues.  Ability to produce a variety of written communications products in a clear, concise style. Ability to deliver oral presentations to various audiences. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations. Takes responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.

•Communication:  Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

•Planning& Organizing:  Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individual of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. Experience with design software (Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator) and literate in standard software applications (including Powerpoint, Excel and Word), Visio, Indesign and Dreamweaver is desirable.  Experience with video creation is also desirable.

Languages

Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
