如何通过阅读外刊练习英文写作？

晚上失眠，看了几篇Foreign Affairs（《外交事务》）的文章，其中有篇讲到了疫情对国际政治秩序的影响，里面有些很实用的表达，和大家分享一下。

一、如何进行对比/转折？

文章在对比新冠病毒和其它冠状病毒的特点时，有这么一段话：

Ebola is highly lethal but hard to catch; victims die quickly, before they can pass it on. COVID-19 is the opposite, which means that people tend not to take it as seriously as they should, and so it has, and will continue to, spread widely across the globe, causing vast numbers of deaths. 

埃博拉病毒病死率很高，但很难被感染；患者在传播疾病之前就会很快死去。而新冠病毒恰好相反，这意味着人们往往不会重视它，因此它得以在全球范围内广泛传播，而且未来还会继续传播，造成大量死亡。

这段话中有一个很地道的表达：XX is the opposite，意思是：XX恰好相反。

写作中，如果我们要进行转折或对比，就可以用到这个表达，比如，在教育话题的写作中，我们有可能要对比素质教育和应试教育的异同，可以说：

Spoon-feeding education causes students' loss of interest in learning. But quality education is the opposite, which focuses on the whole — social, emotional, mental, physical, and cognitive — development of each student.填鸭式教育使学生失去了学习的兴趣，而素质教育相反，它关注学生的全面发展——社交、情绪、思想、身体和认知。

spoon-feeding很形象，用勺子喂，即“填鸭式灌输，满堂灌”。

或者，在介绍观点的时候，我们可以先铺垫一个大众的错误观点，再通过“Yet the reality/truth is the opposite”来引出自己的观点，比如，在讨论“科技利弊”的作文中，可以说：

Many people believe that the technology will only make things worse, but the truth is quite the opposite.

XX is the opposite还有几个变体，比如XX show the opposite 和 XX tell the opposite story，《经济学人》中曾有一篇文章探讨了英国的高等教育，文中有这么一句话：

Since elite universities tend to produce higher-earning graduates than less selective institutions do, you might expect them to teach more practical courses. Yet data from Britain’s department for education show the opposite.

与普通高校相比，精英大学培养出的毕业生往往收入更高，你可能认为这些精英大学教授更多实践性课程。然而，英国教育部的数据显示，情况恰恰相反。

elite universities：精英学校、顶尖学府，比如中国的清华北大。

less selective institutions字面意思为“没有那么挑剔的学府”，是对“普通高校”的一种委婉的称呼，其中less selective与elite相对，institutions 是对前面universities的替换。

最后一句XX show the opposite 从大众的错误观点过渡到了实际情况。

再比如，《经济学人》中还有篇文章讨论了美国Uber对黄色计程车的影响，文章先铺设了一个观点：Uber用户增多，是因为总体乘车需求扩大，而不是抢夺的黄色计程车的客户。然后文章进行转折，引出事实：

However, figures for the taxi-saturated CBD tell the opposite story. During the two years to June 2015, Uber’s pickups in the CBD rose from an estimated 175,000 to 1.8m, while yellow cabs’ hails in the area fell by around 1.4m.

然而，来自出租车密集的中央商务区的数据则显示了另一番景象。在截至2015年6月的两年时间里，Uber在CBD的载客量从约17.5万增长到180万，而该地区黄色出租车的载客量减少了约140万。

这篇文章讲了Uber对黄色计程车的影响，也适用于分析中国的“滴滴对出租车的影响”。

pickup和hail在这里都是名词，指“载客次数”、“叫车次数”，文中都是一回事。

首句tell the opposite story引出相反的事实——通过数据表明，Uber用户大都来自黄色计程车。而且 tell the story 是一个非常形象生动的说法。

二、如何委婉表达某事希望渺茫

文中有段话对疫情及经济进行了预测：

There will be no moment when countries will be able to declare victory over the disease; rather, economies will open up slowly and tentatively, with progress slowed by subsequent waves of infections. Hopes for a V-shaped recovery appear wildly optimistic. 

各国宣布战胜疾病的时间遥遥无期，而经济会缓慢、试探性地开放，随后的感染潮将减缓复苏的进展。对V型复苏的希望似乎过于乐观。

这段话中有一个很好用的表达：Hopes for... appear wildly optimistic，字面意思是：对...的希望过于乐观。

wild本是“野生的”意思，当和某些词搭配时，可以表示“毫无根据的”含义，比如特朗普经常对中国 make wild accusations（进行无端指责），再如 make a wild guess 瞎猜。

文中 wildly optimistic≈overoptimistic 过于乐观的，写作中可以用来形容几率渺茫、可能性极低，比如，在有关“工作和家庭”的写作中，我们可以说：

Hopes for excelling at work while raising a child appear wildly optimistic.一边带着孩子，一边还要在工作上出类拔萃，这想得似乎过于乐观了。

excel in/at...是动词词组，表示“在...优秀，在...出类拔萃”。

三、如何表示“克服困难”

在讲到疫情对企业带来的挑战时，文章说：

Only large companies with deep pockets will be able to ride out the storm, with the technology giants gaining most of all, as digital interactions become ever more important.

只有资金雄厚的大公司才能渡过难关，因为数字交互变得愈加重要，科技巨头从中受益最多。

deep pockets字面意思是“很深的兜”，小时候我们买衣服都喜欢挑兜深的，因为能装更多糖果，对大人来说，兜深的衣服能装更多钱，所以deep pockets就引申出“资金雄厚”的意思，我们可以说 XX with deep pockets，也可以变成形容词：a deep-pocketed company，有种财大气粗的赶脚~

这句话中还有一个很形象的表达：ride out the storm

这个表达的关键在于out，out表示“从...中出来”，所以ride out the storm就可以理解成“从风暴中翻越出来”，即“乘风破浪、渡过难关”，很有画面感。

这个表达的使用范围比较广，关于学习、工作、生活、人生哲理的写作中都可以用得上，我们造个句子：

The quickening pace of modern life has made competition increasingly fierce, but we must have the courage to ride the storm out.当代生活节奏不断加快，使竞争日趋激烈，但我们必须有勇气渡过难关。
