Elon Musk visited China this week. His first visit to China in three years comes as Beijing is pushing to show it is open to foreign business. Since landing in Beijing on Tuesday, Musk has met with China's foreign, commerce and industry ministers and has dined with the Chairman of top battery supplier CATL. Musk has yet to make any public statements during his trip. But China foreign ministry quoted the billionaire as describing the U.S. and China economies as "conjoined twins" and saying that Musk was opposed to their decoupling. Musk's visit is not just about Tesla, but its a "political statement" calling for stability on both sides of the Pacific, one analyst says. On Tesla’s side, Musk’s visit comes as the company faces heightened competition from Chinese-made electric vehicles and a price war in China.
China launched the Shenzhou-16 to send three astronauts, including its first civilian, into orbit early Tuesday. In its press conference, the China Manned Space Agency also reiterated China’s plan for a manned lunar landing by 2030. The U.S. aims to put astronauts back on the lunar surface by the end of 2025, aided by private sector players such as SpaceX and Blue Origin. Plans for permanent crewed bases on the moon are also being considered by both countries. In addition to their lunar programs, the U.S. and China have also landed rovers on Mars and Beijing plans to follow the U.S. in landing a spacecraft on an asteroid. Space is increasingly seen as a new area of competition between China and the United States.
44.3%。Average long-term US mortgage rate(30-year home loan) climbs to 6.79% this week, highest level since November. The Fed has raised its benchmark interest rate 10 times in 14 months in a bid to lower stubbornly high inflation. Fed Chair Jerome Powell has recently signaled that the Fed may forego another interest rate hike at this month’s meeting of policymakers. Still, a pause now doesn’t mean the Fed couldn’t resume hiking later this year. And other Fed officials continue to express support for more hikes, given inflation remains elevated. The U.S. housing market has been slow to regain its footing this year, with elevated mortgage rates and a thin inventory of homes on the market working to limit sales. As a result, home purchase loans were down 44.3% in the first quarter compared to the same period last year, according to an analysis released Thursday by real estate data firm Attom.- 曾被称为女版乔布斯的“滴血验病”实验室创始人霍姆斯今起服刑
Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of the blood-testing lab Theranos, arrived at a federal prison in Texas on Tuesday to start serving an 11-year, 3-month sentence. Holmes was once a Silicon Valley icon and paper billionaire. In 2003, when she dropped out of Stanford University at age 19 to start a company, a startup that claimed to have invented technology that could accurately test for a range of conditions using just a few drops of blood. Over the next decade, Holmes built Theranos into a darling of Silicon Valley, at one point valued at more than $9 billion. Her company began to unravel after a Wall Street Journal investigation in 2015 reported that Theranos had only ever performed roughly a dozen of the hundreds of tests it offered using its proprietary technology, and with questionable accuracy. She was found guilty of four counts of wire fraud in January 2022. Holmes is now the rare Silicon Valley founder to be tried for and convicted of fraud.
Peer-to-Peer payment apps and non-banks offering bank-like services have exploded in popularity in the last decade. But the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau warned Thursday, customers of Venmo, PayPal and CashApp should not store their money with those apps for the long term because the funds might not be safe during a crisis. The alert comes several weeks after the failure of Silicon Valley Bank, Signature Bank and First Republic Bank. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation insures bank accounts up to $250,000. But money stored in Venmo or CashApp or Apple Cash is not being held in a traditional bank account. So, if there is an event similar to a bank run with those payment apps, those funds may not be protected.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services said Thursday that it will pay for new Alzheimer’s drug Leqemi that are granted approval from the Food and Drug Administration, although it will require physicians to collect data on how well the drugs perform in the real world. Leqembi received accelerated approval from the FDA in January, based on the evidence suggesting it would slow cognitive decline in early Alzheimer's patients. But the medication costs $26,500 a year, making it out of reach for most people. Medicare currently pays for Leqembi only if patients are enrolled in a clinical trial. The move Thursday came ahead of an FDA advisory committee meeting on June 9 at which a panel of experts is expected to vote on whether to recommend that the FDA grant full approval to Leqembi. If the advisory committee meeting goes well and the FDA grants traditional approval, people on Medicare who want the drug should be able to get it under the new Medicare rules. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about 6 million people are living with Alzheimer.2023年底特律大奖赛将于本周末重返市中心街头。 The 2023 Detroit Grand Prix is returning to the streets of downtown this weekend. Gov.Gretchen Whitmer announced a new economic development strategy Wednesday at the Detroit Regional Chamber's Mackinac Policy Conference while affirming her administration’s approach to luring companies to create new jobs in Michigan with taxpayer-funded subsidies. Dubbed "Make It In Michigan," Whitmer said the program is made up of three types of investments: those in projects, people and places. She offered few specifics on the full slate of proposals the strategy includes, promising to lay them out in greater detail in the near future. But she said when it comes to landing new projects, the program proposes a "Make it In Michigan Transformational Brownfield Fund" and "Make it in Michigan Advanced Manufacturing and Clean Tech Competitiveness Fund." The brownfield fund will focus on preparing sites for new investments. Meanwhile, the competitiveness fund would help Michigan secure federal dollars from the CHIPS Act and Inflation Reduction Act to boost domestic semiconductor and clean energy sectors, Whitmer said. The state's economic development agency has seen record interest from businesses seeking state support to expand in Michigan or move to the state, Whitmer said.
