The visits by leading foreign businesspeople have coincided with efforts by the ruling Communist Party to revive investor interest in China’s slowing economy. On Thursday, the Gates Foundation pledged $50 million to bolster the Global Health Drug Discovery Institute’s capacity to develop drugs to fight diseases like malaria and tuberculosis. The institute was jointly founded by the Gates Foundation, Tsinghua University and the Beijing municipal government.

Chinese foreign minister Qin Gang urged the United States to stop meddling in its affairs and harming its security in a call with Blinken on Wednesday and said it should respect China's core concerns to arrest declining relations between the superpowers. Having postponed a February trip after a suspected Chinese spy balloon flew over U.S. airspace, Blinken is set to become the highest ranking U.S. government official to visit China since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021. One alarming aspect of the sour ties has been Beijing's reluctance to have open military-to-military dialogue with Washington, despite repeated U.S. attempts. U.S. officials said Blinken would push to establish open communication channels to ensure competition with the Chinese does not spiral into conflict. U.S. officials expect Blinken's visit will pave the way for more bilateral meetings, including possible trips by U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, in the coming months.

The breach has affected 3.5 million Oregonians with driver’s licenses or state ID cards, and anyone with that documentation in Louisiana, authorities said. The hackers exploited a flaw in a popular file-transfer software known as MOVEit made by Massachusetts-based Progress Software. Hundreds of organizations across the globe have likely had their data exposed after the hackers used the flaw to break into networks in recent weeks. Multiple US federal agencies, including the Department of Energy, were breached. Heading into the weekend, US officials and corporate executives across the country continue to hunt for signs of stolen data and to try to keep the hackers from extorting victims. The hackers appear to be focusing their extortion on companies that may pay, adding alleged victims to their dark-web site to pressure them. US and state governments say they have not received any demands.

But that doesn’t mean more rate hikes are not coming down the pike. Fed officials signaled Wednesday they expect additional rate hikes — as many as two more quarter-point increases some time this year. The two-week long "Air Defender" exercise is set to run until June 23 and will involve 25 countries, 10,000 personnel and 250 aircraft, according to NATO. "Air Defender is necessary because we live in a more dangerous world," NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu said in a statement. "As we face the biggest security crisis in a generation, we stand united to keep our countries and our people safe." The military drills are being hosted by Germany. The U.S. has sent over thousands of service members, mostly from National Guard units, to participate in the exercises, the newspaper adds. NATO said "Air Defender" has been planned for several years. "Most of the aircraft will be stationed on several German air bases. Training missions will primarily take place over the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and Southern Germany," it said. "The drills are aimed at boosting interoperability and preparedness to protect against aircraft, drones and missiles attacks on cities and critical infrastructure. Other training events will include supporting ground troops and evacuation missions," NATO added.

Amid a tight labor market, many were also able to find a better job, with better pay. Now, experts say the phenomenon is finished. In fact, the so-called “quits” rate has steadily declined since last spring and is now virtually identical (just 0.1% above) the pre-pandemic rate in February 2020. Essentially, quits are back to the 2019 pre-Covid average. Pitchford put together a play to educate people about the historical importance of that time. It occurs at 1 p.m. on Monday (June 19) at Bowens Senior Citizens Center in Pontiac. The county also paid tribute to Elizabeth Denison Forth, a Macomb County woman born into slavery. She was the first person to purchase property in Oakland County. A marker with more information about her life was unveiled as the Juneteenth flag was raised over the county.
