The five people aboard the Titan submersible that had been missing for days were killed when the small vessel carrying them to the wreckage site had a catastrophic implosion. The debris was found about 1,600 feet from the Titanic's bow on the seafloor, and it is too early to tell when the Titan imploded. However, an "anomaly" detected by the U.S. Navy was likely the small watercraft's fatal blast. The anomaly was picked up when the Navy went back and analyzed its acoustic data after the submersible was reported missing that day. The 22-foot vehicle was on a dive to the Titanic site when it lost contact with its support ship Sunday morning. OceanGate, the company that operated the Titan, issued a statement saying the travelers "have sadly been lost." The other four people believed to have perished were Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, British adventurer Hamish Harding, and French deep-sea explorer and Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet. The White House expressed its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives on the Titan. The complex search and rescue mission attracted international attention and involved personnel from the U.S., Canada, France, and the United Kingdom.
The U.S. Supreme Court has affirmed President Biden's authority to focus the government's immigration enforcement policies on those who are a threat or recently entered the country. The decision, the second in a year, affirmed the executive branch's power in matters of immigration. The justices said the Department of Homeland Security has the authority to focus on arresting recent border crossers and those who commit violent crimes, rather than the millions of other noncitizens who have lived here for years. The Biden administration policy is a departure from that of the Trump administration, which said anyone in the country illegally could be targeted for deportation. The decision was 8-1, with Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. as the lone dissenter. The decision could enhance presidential discretion in enforcement priorities in other areas of law. If the Court green-lighted this suit, we could anticipate complaints in future years about alleged Executive Branch under-enforcement of any similarly worded laws, whether they be drug laws, gun laws, obstruction of justice laws, or the like. One of the major remaining cases before the court also involves questions about the legal standing of states to challenge another Biden priority: forgiving about $400 billion in student loan debt. That case, as well as a decision about race-conscious decisions in university admissions, is due within the next week, as the court tries to complete its work by the end of June. The next decisions will be announced Tuesday.
June. 22nd. 2023, Narendra Modi, the Indian prime minister, was welcomed to the White House by President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden for a state visit filled with pomp and pageantry. Modi was denied a visa to enter the US in 2005, when he was the chief minister of Gujarat, over charges that he had failed to stop deadly riots against minority Muslims. However, now that he's the leader of the world's largest democracy, the Biden administration has been embracing him more closely as it seeks to counter China's global influence. During his state visit, Modi practiced yoga on a yellow mat outside the United Nations headquarters in New York. The event was held in recognition of the International Day of Yoga, which Modi persuaded the U.N. to observe annually. The Bidens hosted a few foreign dignitaries for a state visit, including Brigitte Macron, Kim Keon Hee, and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. Modi's visit was marked by a joint news conference with Biden, where he addressed questions from an Indian journalist and a Wall Street Journal reporter. The news conference was a scaled-down affair compared to those usually held as part of a state visit, but Modi's advisers were far from thrilled with the idea. Modi's state visit infuriated human rights advocates who blame him for widespread attacks against India's Muslims and other minorities. Biden's administration has accused India's government of participating in unlawful and arbitrary killings, restricting freedom of speech, and allowing violence against religious, racial, and ethnic minorities. During his joint news conference with Biden, Modi insisted there was no discrimination in India and that democracy is in India's DNA. Chinese President Xi Jinping met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, highlighting the importance of a sense of responsibility for history, people, and the world in handling China-U.S. relations. Xi emphasized the need for the two countries to find the right way to get along, as the future of humanity depends on their ability to find the right way to get along. The international community is concerned about the current state of China-U.S. relations and expects them to coexist peacefully and cooperatively. Xi also emphasized that major-country competition does not represent the trend of the times and cannot solve the United States' problems or challenges facing the world. He emphasized that the world is a peaceful, development-oriented, and win-win cooperation, and China respects the US interests and must not hurt China's legitimate rights and interests. Xi called for the US to adopt a rational and pragmatic attitude and work with China in the same direction, translating positive statements into actions to stabilize and improve China-U.S. relations. The world will now wait and see if China and the US can properly deal with their relations.
3M has reached a $10.3 billion settlement with US cities and towns over their claims that the company contaminated drinking water with Forever Chemicals. The settlement covers remediation to water suppliers that detected the chemical at any level or may do so in the future. 3M is facing about 4,000 lawsuits by states and municipalities for PFAS contamination and does not admit any liability. The settlement requires court approval and would put an end to legal claims, including a test case brought by the City of Stuart, Fla., that had been scheduled for a trial before a federal judge on June 5. The settlement will go far in helping cities and towns address PFAS water contamination, but local taxpayers will still be left footing much of the bills for cleanup. The settlement needs approval by the federal judge in South Carolina, the plaintiffs to sign on, and the judge must also approve the reasonableness of any fee request from the dozens of law firms representing plaintiffs in the litigation. 3M said it would continue to address other PFAS litigation by defending itself in court or through negotiated resolutions, all as appropriate. Researchers have sought to put a dollar value on the health harms from PFAS in the United States, with a 2022 study finding the costs of treating diseases attributable to PFAS exposure to be as much as $62.6 billion.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has filed a lawsuit against Amazon, alleging that the e-commerce giant has deceived millions of consumers into signing up for its Prime subscription service through deceptive user interface designs. The complaint, filed in the US District Court for the Western District of Washington, alleged that Amazon used manipulative, coercive, or deceptive user-interface designs called 'dark patterns' to trick consumers into enrolling in automatically-renewing Prime subscriptions. The FTC complaint also claimed that Amazon deliberately made it harder to cancel subscriptions than to enroll in Prime, creating a "labyrinthine" cancellation process. This lawsuit marks the FTC's most significant step against business practices that harm consumers by either luring them in or keeping them trapped using psychological gimmicks. The complaint targets a key area of Amazon's business, where the company topped 200 million paid Prime subscribers in 2021, fueled in part by investments in original content and faster shipping. Amazon called the FTC's claims "false on the facts and the law" and said it did not receive notice before the complaint was filed. The complaint also alleged that Amazon made it easy to sign up for Prime in just two clicks and often buried specifics about recurring bills in fine print. This marks the first major lawsuit against the company by FTC Chair Lina Khan, who helped kickstart a wider debate on tech platforms' impact on competition with an influential journal article in 2017 highlighting potential antitrust issues involving Amazon.
Birmingham has approved a proclamation for eight other communities to file a joint complaint about Michigan's weak law on loud vehicles. Birmingham's police chief claims vehicles are louder due to car buffs circumventing factory systems and new models offering instant dashboard settings to rev the roar. Birmingham's cops wrote over 1,000 tickets this spring for speeding, reckless driving, and other violations targeting loud exhaust. Royal Oak's mayor and city manager sent letters to state lawmakers to toughen state laws, making it easier for cops to ticket loud vehicles. Two state lawmakers from the Woodward Corridor in Oakland County are introducing bills to curb vehicle noise. Health experts say loud vehicles add stress to drivers and upset people living nearby, disrupting sleep of school-age children. A 2019 study by Massachusetts General Hospital found that those living near high levels of "transportation noise" are likely to have higher heart rates, blood pressure, increased arterial inflammation, and more heart attacks. Intermittent noise, such as the occasional hot rod's jarring roar, is more harmful than nonstop noise, even when decibel levels are roughly equivalent.
