What is painting?

Why we paint?

What's the real essense of painting?

Where's the difficulty of painting?

... ...

This portrait,

just came from my impression of myself.

there was no object of it.

It was entirely from the material itself.

After the color was first added to the paper,

i would start to rub it with my hands.

There was also no palette,

all colors were added to the paper directly.

random result.

It is like an action that is followed by materials and methods.

Your thoughts couldn’t really control how the painting is going.

It really depends on what pigment you use,

what the method is,

 and what pen you use.

It is entirely created by methods and materials,

but not your emotions in your mind.

I started to read Bible recently.

And i find Cain,

Abel, these characters are particularly interesting.

So i wondered if i can paint my imagination of these characters.

The thing is, nobody has ever seen Abel and Cain.

They are completely abstract.

So i can only draw them with imagination.

With my understanding of their characters.

For example, their heads, fingers……

Because it’s painted with crayon.

There were some small crumble,

left there.

I removed it by hands.

Actually, i tried a different relationship with the painting paper.

I thought the paper was quite like my own space,

a studio, my spiritual junkyard.

If it’s just a junkyard,

who would care about the outside looking of it?

You just threw things in.

And then you felt comfortable.

Because you made it complete.

So how do you know if it is finished.

I stopped when i didn’t feel like to draw anymore.

That’s how i finished.

I painted everything i can possibly imagine.

I used to think there must be some visual incompleteness after i stopped.

Also felt a bit empty.

Yeah, maybe. Should i fill in all the blank?

To make it balance?

It’s not a problem for me.

When it had more words on it, i drew.

After i drew, i looked up the thought about the words i had written on it.

It seemed to be something that i used to excrete.

Used to be on the mall

Now can be on the paper.

Got it from there.

So the word is not directly from my mind.

It is what i saw on the wall.

I had the feeling of carrying it from there.

At the time, i felt triggered by people’s thinking,

the inside thought.

That was a very chaotic period of time.

Like, they’re all different things inside of your brain in just one or two seconds.

And they’re all out of order,

with no connection.

For example, after i finished this,

i don’t know how suddenly i remembered that there’s a type of car i talked about with my friends in the daytime.

They said they wanted to buy it.

It only stayed in my mind for a second.

But it still became a message.

So i just thought about the model,

the number of it,

i put it on.

There’s one more.

For example, creating something new requires weight from another material.

两克

Like two gram.

I don’t know how i would think of it.

Maybe because i was at a very open status,

in a quite casual situation.

So i just let me imagination wonder.

It’s very natural.

i put everything in my mind,

very directly.

Just like this kind of process.

Is it very difficult to go back into that status?

This is what i call mobility.

This thing for me,

is like every painting is different.

It is impossible to make them exactly the same.

What i really want to know is what is the difficulty of working in such an creative status.

How much time you have been prepared for it, or if you have ever overcome anything to get into it.

Like, i just said it.

For someone who doesn’t know much about contemporary art, he definitely thinks that they’re nothing to do with art.

So what is the difficulty of it?

I think the difficulty is the simpleness.

It is like a human struggle.

Actually it’s very difficult to bear the loneliness and reach to relatively freedom.

People can never avoid the influence from the society, the social system and your tradition.

And this kind of influence is way more powerful than u imagine.

So i think it’s rare to see someone being themselves.

People rarely have a chance to be real.

I mean, most people don’t dare to paint like this,

or they wouldn’t do.

When i paint, i must have had expectations for myself.

Like visually satisfying.

Entering such a status has such a mental difficulty.

I think it’s hard.

only if you start working so that you can imagine.

Only if you start to work, you will find many things are not as easy as you imagine.

But I think that when people are not working, it is very easy to imagine themselves very versatile.

I read some bible.

It mentioned the son of Jesus.

So I was wondering what the son would be like?

Like what kind of status?

These are small, I started to draw small things after.

Like the length of the wrist.

I feel that I found a more comfortable expression inside the mind.

For example, the size of this character.

When I was painting this, there was no text in my mind.

They’re all characters.

Since it is the imagination of the characters, why are all the characters incomplete?

Or the character is just like this, what u found during the time of painting

For example, this is painted with pencil.

I was just completely following the feeling of this material.

Like here, still can tell it is hair.

Yes, fringe.

I stopped until I painted here.

I felt as if it is not the image in my mind, it seemed to be this thing, that’s it I thought.
