Keith Lam

aka: Nunu Kong

“MAN, being the servant and interpreter of Nature, can do and understand so much and so much only as he has observed in fact or in thought of the course of nature: beyond this he neither knows anything nor can do anything”: according to Francis Bacon, the universe is an objective being which cannot be transformed through human will. One’s cognition of the world can only be obtained though perceptual experience from the objective outwards. Objects can be perceived only by human sensation. Therefore, sensation plays the role as the entry to reason. When technology, on the other hand, acts almost like another skin on contemporary people, the possibility of sensation can be released endlessly into an infinite sphere or even serve to create a new sensory system, and exploit the unpredictable reign of sense and sensation.
With an indefinable curiosity towards intangible and unknowable fields, artists often try to liberate all potential possibilities of imperceptible phenomenon from their stereotypes through cross-media practice and unique media types, guiding the audience to unlock their fixed preconceptions of the invisible and the inaudible.
Ming Contemporary Art Museum’s new media group exhibition “Sensory Canvas” is composed of two sets of topics in four categories, made up of 9 works from 8 artists. Form of Nature and Form of Motion show how artists visualize the invisible in nature and motion, through different media approaches such as kinetic installations, light pieces, simulation, and more, showcasing another perspective by reconstructing or deconstructing the existing. Stepping further towards extending imagination to all kinds of existence in the universe, Form the Nature and Form the Motion present a trans-nature sensation beyond general cognition by composing original formats into a hybrid status.

Artist talk
Sensory Canvas: Transboundary of New Media Arts
Time: 15:30-16:30
Moderator:Keith Lam
Paintings, with its line - color system, and its versatile organ - eye, discovers the reality of the body. This way of dismantling organs as tools of independent function, merging sense of visual into touch, and vise versa, enabling eyes the ability to touch and paint, and hands to see.
This is Gilles Deleuze’s statement on Francis Bacon-Logique’s works in “Francis Bacon-Logique de la sensation” and he called it “haptic vision.”
Combining the techniques of cross-media types, new media artistic practice spans over the barrier. It explores the trans-sensation possibility of “haptic vision” between the virtual and the real, the tangible and the intangible.
The opening artist talk “Sensory Canvas: Transboundary of New Media Arts” is hosted by the exhibition curator and new media artist Keith Lam together with participant artists on how the artists explore and create Francis Bacon's “haptic vision” between the visible and the invisible through their own approaches.
Performance
《Nunu with ADA》
Time: 16:50-17:50
Choreography/Performing: Nunu Kong
Nunu Kong’s collaboration with participant artist Karina Smigla-Bobinski’s work ADA.
Nunu Kong
Nunu Kong began her choreographic career in Shanghai in 2005. She has established her own independent dance project “BrandNuDance”, which has become one of China’s most innovative experimental performing arts exchange platforms. Promoting experimental dance as a new and vital medium in contemporary art, she has produced numerous international dance productions, commissions, workshops, lectures and presents Chinese independent performing artist’s work beyond the underground. Through her work, Kong develops a characteristic form of expression, playing with time and space in poetic and illusionary dimensions at both visual and dramaturgy levels, with a particular sense of humor instinctively blended into her choreography. She is the recipient of several international awards, including Dutch Doen Foundation “Young Choreographer Project” (NL, 2007), Theatrical Talent Shanghai Cultural Development Foundation (CN, 2008), two Gluck Art Foundation Grants (2011 and 2012, US) and the Asian Cultural Council Fellowship (2015-2016).
