实用语料
如何提出现象,导入话题
1. China is the world's largest cigarette producer and consumer.
2. Currently, a new issue is coming into focus as a threat from tobacco usage—should smoking be banned in public places?
3. When people smoke in public, they put the health of others at risk. The dangers of secondhand smoking has been used to justify increasingly stringent restrictions on smoking in public places.
4. Smoking remains a relatively universal phenomenon in public venues, which does jeopardize both the environment and public health. But it's still quite common to see people lighting up in places where smoking is prohibited.
如何分析支持派理由
1. Tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals. About 70 of them are known to cause cancer. Smoking is the top risk factor for lung cancer.
2. Smokers have a three to four times greater risk of coronary heart disease than non-smokers, and have a nearly four times higher risk of cerebral hemorrhage and suffering a stroke.
3. Smoking costs six million lives annually, according the World Health Organization, ten percent of whom are the victim of second-hand smoking.
4. Reactions vary from mild eye irritation and sneezing to more threatening reactions, especially for predisposed individuals such as asthmatics, people with bronchitis and the elderly. Patients with angina pectoris who are exposed to carbon monoxide from cigarette smoke can tolerate less exercise before experiencing chest pain.
5. Some studies now indicate that second hand smoke may be the second leading cause of lung cancer occurring in non-smokers.
6. Thousands of cases of lung cancer and heart disease are attributed to secondhand smoking every year.
7. Not to mention the cost to businesses and taxpayers to beautify streets, buildings and other public places that have been littered and damaged by smoking. These are some of the hidden costs of smoking.
如何分析反对派理由
1. Smokers feel they have the right to smoke any time and any place they choose. They feel that they are only hurting themselves. But the increasing evidence that side-stream smoke is posing a health threat to the people surrounding the smoker has opened up a whole new controversy.
2. Many countries have laws that prohibit smoking in public places because it affects non-smokers as well. This damages non-smokers' health against their will and might cause them lung cancer. But also it seems as though this law protects only one side and public places, which should be available to everyone for all purposes, meet only the needs of non-smokers.
3. Also this is bad for tourism in some parts. Caterers are financially damaged by these new laws that suggest them to provide services to only one part of both residents and tourists. Is this law actually going to protect non-smokers or simply affect smokers? Is this a noble deed or a true act of discrimination?
如何提出你自己的观点
1. In my opinion, smoking in public places should be prohibited. Maybe smokers should have the right to smoke, but it's not reasonable if that right is harmful to others. Obviously, if people smoke in public places, non-smokers have no choice but to become secondhand smokers. As a matter of fact, they have the right to choose not to be secondhand smokers.
2. The authorities should coordinate to promote a smoking ban by various means, and strengthen enforcement teams with supervision and enforcement as strict as it is on drunk driving.
3. While tuberculosis and infectious diseases are no longer the major health threats they used to be, degenerative diseases such as heart disease and cancers are now of major concern. With the possibility of smoking contributing to an increase of these diseases in non-smokers, society is becoming intolerant of cigarette smoking.
4. The current law bans smoking in public places, but it does allow for designated smoking areas in places like bars, taverns and restaurants, provided these areas don’t take up more than 25% of the venue.
