Five PhD positions are advertised at FU Berlin, University of Salzburg and University of Zurich in a joint project on 'Variational Pragmatics of German: Comparing Communicative Patterns'.

The focus of the tri-national project 'Variant pragmatics of German - communicative patterns in comparison' (project locations FU Berlin, PLUS Salzburg and University of Zurich) is the investigation of phenomena that involve the use of greetings, polite particles, speech act realizations such as complaints or requests, and that relate to address behavior. The overriding aim of the project is to work out how the variation in this area of phenomena is distributed geographically and how the prevailing public assumptions about communicative patterns are presented in relation to the language usage data. Strictly area-comparative, data from Germany, Austria and Switzerland are collected (comparing countries as well as nationally) and compared with attributions from the media discourse. The findings from the investigation should be made fruitful both on a theoretical level (e.g. for plural reality research) and in terms of methodology, and a close connection to other disciplines is also planned (e.g. sociology and psychology). On the basis of the results, both the specialist discourse and the public discourse should be enriched and shaped by empirical findings.
