Euston

Zorrotzaurre

Mind

- NICE2035(上海杨浦区)

- MeetU Lab (上海杨浦区)

Urban Textures Changing Our Lives

Meanwhile Spaces and Temporary Uses for Green and Just Cities

-- designing with and for the ecological society

Cities are our natural and social environment. Improvement and regeneration of the infrastructures and the built environment is continuous, which provide the comfort and efficiency of the urban environment. However, cities are not only skeletons of buildings. They are organisms, complex systems which require the agency of the people, the expression of cultures, the manifestation of innovation activities, the integration with the ecological space, to work properly. To build a better city, a sustainable city, a future city, the hardware and software have to be integrated.

This is the focus of T-Factor project, and the important background premise of this research project.(Tap to know more)

Can the model of urban development involve hardware and software aspects harmoniously? And how? What are the related  practices in China and European cities? And how are they doing?

The Urban Regeneration Festival organized by T-Factor Shanghai includes an exhibition of the project’s methodology and results, with materials and updates from the six pilot cities in Europe (Amsterdam, Milano, Kaunas, Lisbon, Bilbao, London). The exhibition will showcase examples and actions of the work in the different cities, and present the contents of the Shanghai pilot projects, in the three location of Xinhua CDC, NICE2035 community, and MeetU Lab.

The exhibition provides also a thematic area about Urban Ecologies in which more detailed works is shared about the synergy between Shanghai and the other partners involved in the ecology/urban/biodiversity missions.

The exhibition collects projects from the T-Factor pilot cities, the T-Factor Shanghai partners, and the research work and collaboration of Tongji University D&I Ecology and Cultures Innovation Lab. SUSAS has kindly contributed to the exhibition with three artworks from the recent project “METro-BIOSIS”.

The exhibition is free for the public, but please register either in advance or at the venue.👇

Please enter throuth from Shangqiu Rd.

At the exhibition entrance on the left you will find the introduction of the Urban Regeneration Festival and the concept of this exhibition. Meanwhile Space and Temporary Uses are important concept for T-Factor. They are assets for the urban regeneration to be utilised, experimented, abd valorized for the co-benefit of cities and citizens. They offer the opportunity to prototype ways of transformation of the city and different forms of community participation.

You are welcome to dig more into the details of the project by browsing the research reports that we wrote collectively with the partners participating to the project.

On the right, the first artwork kindly shared by SUSAS: the documentary offers a snapshot of the  Shanghai from the very unique perspective of the water, along the river which is so dear to the city and the locals. This piece it is not only a very beautiful outlook to the city from a radical perspective, a gentle travel; it is also a way to think of the city as a combination of human and natural elements.

Meanwhile Spaces and Temporary Uses as urban regeneration strategy

This part mainly focuses on the Pilots, Advanced Cases and meaningful projects.

EU Pilots

In this section you can explore how each citiy of the project (London, Amsterdam, Bilbao, Lisbon, Kaunas, Milan) is working on the temporary uses and temporary places strategy. Each of the cities is working on different challenges and missions of urban regeneration, dealing with the topic of environment and ecology, entrepreneurship, circularity, heritage, social inclusion, cultures and creativity, and more.

Shanghai Pilots

T-Factor Shanghai is applying the Meanwhile Spaces methodology and research contents on three sites in the city: Xinhua Community CDC (a large participatory initiative lead by BigFish), NICE2035 (an innovation project for future neighborhood lifestyle supported by Tongji University), and MeetU Lab (an experimental event lab using in-between and reclaimed spaces in commercial areas).

China&EU Advanced Cases

In these boards we share the advanced case study that we conduct around Europe and China to deepen our understanding of temporary uses and places around the country. This part of the research is still ongoing, and at the moment we can only share some preliminary insights, yet a lot of data about very interesting cases in China which present a variety of strategy about urba regeneration: some more focussed on the architecture and building heritage, some looking at innovative participatory and community building models.

The cases are: Digua Community in Beijing, Fan Wu Qi in Guangzhou, Local in Xian, Songkou Old Town in Fuzhou, and the Yulin Community in Chengdu. Welcome to explore!

Urban Ecology Lab as activator of  Meanwhile Uses

The second part of the exhibition is dedicated to dive into the ecological and environmental aspects of urban regeneration.

The mission of city and ecology is very important in the Shanghai pilots, and in this section we showcase projects that address urban green, relationship with urban ecology, and the theme of biodiversity in cities. Shanghai is working in synergy with the other T-Factor cities to experiment on how nature and environment can be included as a fundamental aspect of urban regeneration, and how the use of temporary spaces can inspire citizens to a stronger relationship with the ecosystem.

You are welcome to explore and learn from projects coming from different Urban Ecology Labs around the world.

The final piece of the exhibition is the work of an international artist, Andreco (https://andreco.org/ and  https://www.climateartproject.com/ ) who combines arts and science to discuss environmental challenges and Nature Based Solution. He realized a large scale paitinting in the T-Factor pilot site in Milan, and we hope that by introducing his work to the city of Shanghai there would be more opportunity for landscape intervention that look at the ecology of the city, and would bring not only beauty but also meaningful research contents to the understanding and enjoyment of the citizens.
