First Look: Blue Bottle Coffee Jing'an Kerry Centre Cafe
Blue Bottle Coffee opened its second cafe in Chinese mainland at Jing'an Kerry Centre on August 5.
The cafe is located on the busy West Nanjing Road close to the famous Jing’an Temple.
Blue Bottle collaborated with Keiji Ashizawa Design to design the space. All the furniture in customized by Karimoku Furniture, Japanese home furnishing brand.
The open bar uses hand-made clay tiles inspired by roofing tile shapes widely used in China and other parts of Asia.
This material is also widely used across the cafe .
The first-floor area is not large but has several functions. The tall table opposite the bar is great for appreciating the street views, and the small round table is suitable for a gathering with friends. Floor-to-ceiling semicircular walls and banquette seats line the mall entries on both the first and second floor.
On the right side of the bar is the product display area. Blue Bottle offers dripper stands and filter boxes in collaboration with the Japanese brand, Karimoku Furniture.
The new floating staircase tucked behind the bar provides guests a unique perspective of the coffee-making process from above.
The soft light, custom-designed oversized square coffee table with brickwork inlay, leather couches and chairs combined, create a tranquil place to gather.
There is a large custom-made low table in the middle area, and the triangular-shaped pendant lamp clad by Washi paper is designed by Norm Architects, jointly made by Karimoku Furniture and Kojima Shoten from Kyoto.
Flooring for the entire lounge area was elevated so that guests could enjoy abundant natural light and the view of the street.
Blue Bottle sets strict standards when it comes to coffee.
They only purchase specialty coffees that register 84 or above in the SCA grading and roast at their own roasteries around the globe, and cup to ensure quality after every roast.
The coffee beans used in Blue Bottle are mainly Hayes Valley, Three Africas, Bella Donovan, and Giant Steps. Hayes Valley is the darkest roasted blend by Blue Bottle Coffee, mainly used to make Espresso, while the latter three are mainly used for pour-over coffee and cold brew.
They serve Espresso, Americano, Latte, Cappuccino, Mocha, and other classics, as well as kid-friendly Babyccino and Kids Hot Chocolate.
Blue Bottle Coffee at Jing’an Kerry Centre also launched the store’s special Passion Fruit Cold Brew Liqueur and Smoky Cold Brew Highball.
There is also a seasonal, limited sparkling Blueberry Cold Brew Fizz.
There are also limited culinary like Coffee Tuiles, at this location is served with the rich Hayes Valley coffee cream.
Egg and Ham Crossiant, Smoked Salmon Toast, and Crisp Platter with with cheese sticks, lotus chips, and purple potato chips are some recommended items here.
Over 7,000 Cafes in Shanghai
Within six months, Blue Bottleafee opened two cafes in Shanghai. At the same time, many independent cafes are also struggling to survive in the post-pandemic era.
As of June 30, 2022, the number of cafes in Shanghai has reached 7,857.
Thriving in the industry is a test every cafe will face.
Keiji Ashizawa Design felt that creating an interior space which feels interconnected with the local culture can become a very invaluable task.
