Does the Political System Determine Media Visibility of Politicians?A Comparative Analysis of Political Functions in the News in Sixteen Countries
政治制度决定政治家的媒体知名度吗?十六国新闻政治功能的比较分析
Debby Vos&Peter Van Aelst
Abstract
News coverage of politicians is very unequally distributed:a few powerful politicians receive the bulk of media attention, while the large majority hardly gets into the news. However, case studies show that news outlets in some countries give more attention to ordinary politicians compared to other democracies. This study examines and explains the variation in media visibility of politicians with different institutional functions across Western democracies. We employ a large-scale content analysis of television news, newspapers and online news in sixteen countries to analyze whether a political system logic determines the distribution of political functions appearing in the news. This logic suggests that journalists follow the political hierarchy of the country when covering politicians. We also check for an additional media logic that would push journalists to focus on a limited number of high-standing politicians. The results confirm that both logics matter, but that mainly the structural characteristics of the political system have an impact on the distribution of news coverage of politicians. In countries where political power is more equally distributed across politicians,a broader range of(elite)politicians makes it into the news. Our results suggest that the media logic is nested in the broader political context and in some cases even strengthens the logic of the political system.

One concept, many interpretations:the media’s causal roles in political agenda-setting processes
一个概念,多种解读:媒体在政治议程设置过程中的因果作用
Julie Sevenans
Abstract
While political agenda-setting scholars agree that the news media matter when it comes to agenda setting, surprisingly, there is no consensus on the exact role these media play in the agenda-setting process. In particular, causal interpretations of the media’s role are diverse. This contribution focuses on this ambiguity in the agenda-setting field.First,it outlines the main reasons for the disagreement, both on a theoretical and on an empirical level.Second,it develops a theoretical model that helps to specify what role the news media play under various circumstances.Overall, the paper strongly encourages scholars to reflect more on causal mechanisms in political agenda-setting work, and makes a first attempt at facilitating the interpretation of extant and future findings.

New media and politics
新媒体与政治
Gunn Enli
Abstract
Media and politics have been defined as a symbiosis because they are mutually dependent on each other. Accordingly, current research trends are concerned with investigating how this symbiosis is developing and changing as a result of new media technologies. This article starts by discussing the term ‘new media’ before discussing four main research strands: political activism, political campaigning, political polarization, and political journalism. Strengths and weaknesses in these fields will be discussed, and the concluding remark suggests a vision for further research on new media and politics.

外国媒体中北京形象的变化:对主流英语媒体报道的分析
Guoming Yu
Abstract
Adopting primarily content analysis, the paper collected, through sampling,a total of 1088 articles on Beijing from 18 English-based mainstream Western media between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2014.The analysis covered article number, subject, style and report direction.Extending on such basis,in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine foreign correspondents stationed in Beijing, who come from the United States, the United Kingdom,France,Germany, the Netherland,Italy,Japan,Malaysia and Brazil.A survey was also carried out among foreign correspondents based in Beijing,so as to obtain a general view of the international image of Beijing and its evolution as shaped by foreign media. The mechanisms adopted by foreign media in shaping the image of Beijing and the influencing factors were also analysed.

Abstract
Since the start of large-scale waves of mobilisation in 2011,the importance of identity in the study of collective action via computer-mediated communication(CMC)has been a source of contention.Hence, our research sets out to systematically review and synthesise empirical findings on identity and collective action via CMC from 2012 to 2016.We found that the literature on the topic is broad and diverse, with contributions from multiple disciplines and theoretical and methodological approaches.Based on our findings,we provide directions for future research and propose the adoption of an integrative approach that combines the study of identity and networks to advance our understanding of collective action via CMC.This review contributes to the crossroad of social movement, collective action, communication and media studies. Our results also have practical implications for the organisation of collective action in a society characterised by the pervasive influence of CMC.

Attention and amplification in the hybrid media system:The composition and activity of Donald Trump’s Twitter following during the 2016 presidential election
混合媒体系统中的关注和放大:2016年总统大选期间唐纳德·特朗普的推特的组成和活动

Abstract
Building on studies of the hybrid media system and attention economy,we develop the concept of amplification to explore how the activities of social media–based publics may enlarge the attention paid to a given person or message. We apply the concept to the 2016 US election, asking who constituted Donald Trump’s enormous Twitter following and how that following contributed to his success at attracting attention, including from the mainstream press.Using spectral clustering based on social network similarity,we identify key publics that constituted Trump’s Twitter following and demonstrate how particular publics amplified his social media presence in different ways. Our discussion raises questions about how algorithms“read”metrics to guide content on social media platforms, how journalists draw on social media metrics in their determinations of news value and worthiness, and how the process of amplification relates to possibilities of citizen action through digital communication.
