Ounce for ounce, the finest jade has become more valuable than gold, with the most prized nuggets of “mutton fat” jade — so-named for its marbled white consistency — fetching $3,000 an ounce, a tenfold increase from a decade ago.

#80 Money: Chinese history

Currency first appeared in China in the form of shells. Soon, metal coins became thepredominant form of money in ancient China. Over time, the materials in which thecoins were made changed as did their weights, marks and shapes. China also claimsthe invention of the first paper currency.

The history of Chinese currency spans more than 3000 years. Currency of some type has been used inChina since the Neolithic age which can be traced back to between 3000 and 4500 years ago. Cowryshells are believed to have been the earliest form of currency used in Central China, and were used duringthe Neolithic period.
