Nanshan Pilots Shenzhen's First Intersection Blind Spot Warnings

If you live or work in Nanshan, you may notice something new at the intersection of Gaoxinzhong Road and Science and Technology Road.  Due to high pedestrian traffic, and construction in the area, local authorities chose this intersection to pilot a new blind spot warning tape program, designed to minimize tragic accidents caused when large vehicles turn right.

Interpretation: The blind area of a vehicle is the part of the area where the driver is located in a normal driving position and whose line of sight is blocked by the vehicle body and cannot be directly observed.

Interpretation: The so-called inner wheel difference refers to the difference between the front inner wheel turning radius and the rear inner wheel turning radius when the vehicle turns. Due to the existence of "inner wheel difference", when a large vehicle turns, the trajectories of the front and rear wheels do not coincide.

Traffic accidents involving large trucks have a high fatality rate due to their large tonnage and a long braking distance. Most accidents involving pedestrians and non-motorized vehicles are directely related to unknowingly entering the blind spot by mistake when a truck turns into it.

In order to reduce accidents involving vehicle blind spots, and eliminate hidden dangers in road traffic a new program is being piloted.

The intersection is located in the middle area of the Science and Technology Park. The intersection is connected to Beihuan Avenue in the north and adjacent to the Kexing Science Park, Software Building and Wanji Industrial Park on the southeast side.

During peak hours, the intersection carries a large number of commuter traffic from surrounding enterprises. At the same time, the construction of the underpass project of Nanhai Avenue on the west side of the intersection requires the passage of large engineering vehicles.

Due to construction needs, there are many large vehicles passing through this intersection. When turning right at the intersection, there is the hidden danger of the blind spot of the inner wheel difference.

After many on-site investigations by Nanshan Traffic Police and learning from the advanced management experience of other cities, they chose yellow paint, that is significantly different from the surrounding environment of the intersection, to mark the "no standing areas" on the four right turn lanes at the intersection of Gaoxinzhong Road and Science and Technology Intersection.

Voice prompts are also installed at intersections giving audible reminders as well as visual warnings when passing through the area.

This scheme can effectively eliminate the potential safety hazards to pedestrians, and non-motor vehicles caused by large vehicles turning right. The scheme is currently being piloted. Nanshan Traffic Police will further optimize and improve the color of the warning tapes, prompt fonts, and voice prompts. After the plan is mature, it will be promoted in the whole district.
