Section One:Exploring Cultural Junctions

This first section focuses especially on cultural crossroads and junctions. The section concentrates on re-thinking some conditions of comparative intercultural inquiry, on cultural interfaces of China (especially film, theater, drama, and ethnic minority literature), then on literary images of Russia and of West Africa. The section features an important thematic focus in terms of world minority literature, as opened in Chapter 2.

In Chapter 1 Ming Xie presents a reconsideration of key epistemological conditions of a research focus on comparative intercultural discourse. Comparative scholarship on cultural junctions can gain much from tracing Xie’s concepts.

As Wen Peihong observes in Chapter 2, China's ethnic minority literatures have been undergoing notable changes in globalization in recent years. The author offers a case study of the bilingual Coyote Traces:Aku Wuwu’s Poetic Sojourn in America, which was translated from Chinese into English.

This is followed by an interview (Chapter 3) which Wen Peihong has conducted with Mark Bender, who is a pioneer in academic approaches to Sino-U.S. and world ethnic or minority literatures.

Chapter 4 directs attention to film, as Mao Sihui observes the way films can be situated within a glocalized context, the dual process of globalization and localization. This chapter takes a semiotic approach to the study of an important Chinese film: Feng Xiaogang’s The Banquet (2006), a transculturally creative adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.

In Chapter 5, Agota Revesz considers theater as a social act, with significant systemic divergences between China and Europe. She analyzes four specific case studies for an awareness of what is expected of a production concerning value orientations and how the concept of “theater" is used.

Liu Siyuan in Chapter 6 discusses Zaju drama (from the Yuan Dynasty) in connection with German dramatist Bertolt Brecht’s The Caucasiun Chalk Circle, which was composed in the USA.

In the 20th century, a mythical idea of Russia has been projected by British writers. Olga Sobolev and Angus Wrenn in Chapter 7 offer a critical appraisal of this process, making use of the socio-political theories of Edward Said and Pierre Bourdieu.

In Chapter 8, Charles Ngiewih Teke analyzes a case of cultural authenticity, enriched with traditional values, as communicated in an international space: Alobwed’Epie’s novel The Lady with a Beard(Cameroon).

Section Two: Interpreting Globalization

This second section studies certain global aspects of cultural experience, with attention to China (China’s “going abroad” discourses and the transcultural turn of memory studies focusing on the global south), the movement of cultural narrative from multiculturalism to are considered cosmopolitanism, and also the Western phenomenological experience of space and movement as re-evaluated in two American narratives.

In a context of global Cultural Studies trajectories, in Chapter 9 Keyan G. Tomaselli and Du Yiwei examine how some trajectories of Cultural Studies research are responding to China’s innovative “going abroad" initiative.

Based on the experience of 20th-century cultural politics, Zhou Min in Chapter 10 examines the assumptions of multiculturalism and explores the possibility of an alternative in terms of a community of common human fate.

With the sweeping force of globalization, as Yuan Mingqing shows in Chapter 11, memory studies has encountered a “transcultural turn” and is accordingly freed from being conceptualized according to territorial, political, or national boundaries. A concept of “traveling memory” has been proposed, which aims to provide different perspectives for studying the interaction and cross-referencing of memories in the global era.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and satellite imagery, specifically Google Earth, are characteristic of the Western phenomenological experience of space and movement in an age of globalization and digitization. In Chapter 12, Inge van de Ven and Tom van Nuenen analyze two American novels and their global representations: William T. Vollmann’s The Atlas and Mark Z. Danielewski’s Only Revolutions.
