深入解读

冬天来了，很容易想起 bleak 一词来。这也是一个经常出现在《经济学人》中的单词，比较好记，就比熟词 leak （漏、渗漏、泄漏）前面多了一个字母 b ，也与熟词 break （打破、破碎）只差第二个字母不同。

该词主要源自古北欧语 bleikr （苍白的、发白的、浅黄色的），14世纪出现在英语中时最初拼作 bleik 指“苍白的”。不过这一含义现已不再流行，而是到了16世纪30年代后开始发展出现在的基本含义指某个地方“无遮蔽的、荒凉的、凄凉的、光秃秃的、受到风吹雨打的”，即缺乏植被并暴露在恶劣天气中的，比如：

• 这座坐落在一个饱受风雨侵袭的荒山顶上的房子是用回收的废旧材料建成的。
  The house standing on a bleak, windswept hilltop was built using salvaged materials.

从这个概念出发，既可以用 bleak 形容天气“阴冷的、寒冷刺骨的”以及形容房屋、建筑等“索然无味的、单调的”，也可以用 bleak 形容人或人的表情“无精打采的、郁郁寡欢的、阴郁的”或者说“冷酷的、严峻的、缺乏热情的”，比如：

• 在一个阴冷的冬日，天空中飘洒着雪花。
  Snowflakes were swirling in the air on a bleak winter's day.

• 那位戴着素净首饰的女士冷冷地盯了我一眼。
  The lady who wore discreet jewellery gave me a bleak look.

但更多的是用 bleak 形容境况、形势等“惨淡的、无希望的、不乐观的、前景黯淡的”，即不太可能有好的结果的，看上去也不太可能有所改善的，比如：

• 尽管股票价格已暴跌到历史最低点，但近期前景依然黯淡。
  Although share prices have plummeted to an all-time low, the immediate outlook remains bleak.
