Void 这个单词拼写比较简单，常常很容易联想起 avoid （避免、防止）和 ovoid （蛋形的、卵形的）这两个以其结尾的单词。

具体来说，该词源自拉丁语 vocivos （空着的、未被占用的），14世纪经英国法语以及古法语 voide, viude （空的、广阔的、中空的、荒废的、未开垦的、休耕的）进入英语后，也是作形容词表示“空的、空置的、空无所有的”，常作正式用语使用，主要指在感官能够观察到的范围内是完全空的，不包含任何东西，比如空位（a void space）。
