Tyler Bernd ·

When it comes to climbing or sports, drinkingwill never be the priority. But there is such a running club that theyadvertise themselves as“A drinking club with runningproblem”, which are Hash House Harriers. This club was baptized by World War II and Shekou Hash establishedin China's first foreign bar. People who like sports, have kindness and alittle bit sense of humour gather here, and have accumulated their unique clubculture in the long river of history.

In December 1938, an English chartedaccountant called Gispert established Hash House Harriers with his friends inMalaysia. The group’s name came about primarily because it’s a combination ofthe places where they ate and the source of the activities at the time - theold English schoolboy game "Hares and Hounds". It was a pity that notlong after the establishment of Hash, World War II started, Malaysia wasencroached by the Japanese army and the activities were forced to stop.

With the return of peace, people’s spiritsrevived. The members who had participated in Hash in Malaysia had also returnedto their own countries to start Hashes. It might be because that there was noentertainment in the environment at the time. It might because that people wereeager for something passion in their peaceful life. Hash expanded into everycorner of the world after the establishment of the club in Singapore.

There are quite many hashes in theworld, over 2000, every bigger city, no matter where you go in the world, willhave one.” Bernd said.

In the early 1980s, Shekou was still a smallfishing village. At that time, a group of foreigners who were invited to carryout oil joint ventures tried to find a way to exercise and play, and ShekouHash came into being. In 1987, they even established the first expatriate bar,The Snake Pit, in Shekou as the home of the club. Today, the Hashers still meetat this bar every Saturday at 1pm and never stop.

People who are virgins may mistakenly thinkthat this is just a running club, but as Hash itself advertises, they also arecrazy about beer and games, they have their own culture.

In addition to 6 to 10-ish km of run, the “Beer Stop” is also part of Hashing, whichserves chilled beers andother drinks for specific groups of people. After ashort break at the end of the off-road, the members will make a circle to play games. They say "accusations" to some people and then let them sit on alarge block of ice to accept "punishment." The onlookers may feel funand interesting, and some may feel excessive. In fact, all members of Hash areinclusive and open, and everyone enjoys it with a relaxed and playful attitude.

Everyone from the old men, down to young children, even a well-behaved dogs can join the Hash. Perhaps the purpose of everyone whocomes to Hash is as Tyler said, " it’s a releasehere, you’re allowed to go crazy and just get it out ofyour system, just from getting out in the country, doing something".

From the the committee called “mismanagement”to the "Hash names" of members, singing Hash's unique songs; from thetheme of different festivals to the annual Red Dress Charity Run, Hash tries tocreate unforgettable memories to everyone who meets or going to meet hash, givethem an inherent affiliation, and warm everyone who comes or is coming. Itgives you the opportunity to be yourself, to help strangers become friends, andto make friends into a family.

But when you ask Hasherswhat exactly Hash is, maybe everyone will have a sip of beer and laugh,"It’s just a drinking club with running problem."
