米粒妈精讲英文绘本·苏斯博士| The Cat in the Hat

苏斯博士系列(Dr. Seuss Series)大家已经很熟悉啦,这套书包括了苏斯博士的八部绘本作品,收录在兰登书屋(Random House)出版的针对3-9岁儿童的阅读启蒙系列Beginner Books中。
作为廖彩杏老师鼎力推荐的经典之作,苏斯博士系列在我家已经读了不下十遍。每部绘本都朗朗上口,押韵又好听,能引发孩子对语言的兴趣,增加对自然拼读的理解。
美国的教育专家、学校都提倡把苏斯博士的书大声朗读出来,自然拼读就学成了。
前第一夫人芭芭拉·布什亲自给孩子们朗读了苏斯博士的经典故事《绿蛋和火腿》和《戴高帽子的猫》:

The Cat in the Hat (戴高帽的猫)
《戴高帽的猫》讲述了一个下雨天,兄妹俩独自在家,无所事事之时闯进了一只戴高帽的猫,随后发生了一系列荒诞的趣事。整个故事看似无厘头却充满了天马行空的想象力,幽默滑稽,让人忍俊不禁。
说起这本书的创作过程也颇有意思,苏斯博士开始创作儿童书时并不被看好,早期作品被出版商拒绝过几十次,直至遇到伯乐Random House(兰登书屋)。
随后在Random House的协助下,苏斯博士和他的妻子开始策划Beginner Books系列。
起初,他总结出最常用的400个词汇,而出版商希望他能用250个单词写一本儿童书。9个月后,苏斯博士仅用236词完成了这本家喻户晓的 The Cat in The Hat。
这本里程碑式的作品不仅让高帽猫的形象成为了苏斯博士的标志,也成为了兰登书屋Beginner Books系列沿用至今的经典logo ——

在绘本营第一期的洞洞书系列分享中,米粒妈简单介绍过了自然拼读(Phonics)的概念,这一期的苏斯博士更是公认的练习自然拼读的经典素材。
那自然拼读到底有多实用呢?掌握自然拼读后,不需要借助音标,就能够读出80%的英语单词;听到读音就正确地拼写出来。把枯燥无味的背单词变成一件简单的事,从而达到事半功倍的效果。
而自然拼读的学习流程一般是酱紫滴:
1、学习字母名和字母音
即区分 letter name(字母名) 和 letter sound(字母音),比如看到字母C,就要练习如何读出字母名(本身的名称C/si/),和字母音/k/。
2、学习拼读
这阶段学习拆分单词,知道每个单词是由几个音节组成的。
3、学习字母组合规律
学习各种元音、辅音、押韵词、字母组合规律、视觉词(sight words,即那些数量不多又高频的不符合自然拼读规律,需要单独记忆)。
我们重点需要知道的字母组合有:
CVC Words (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant辅音-元音-辅音):这些CVC单词(有的地方称为”三字词“,如这部绘本中的cat, mat, pot等等)中的元音发短元音。
Long Vowel Word (长元音单词):长元音单词的规则有好几条,如自然拼读中常见的"Silent E",这一规律是说当一个单词以字母“e"结尾时,单词中间的元音(a,e,i,o,u)要发长元音,结尾的e不发音,比如绘本中出现的cake, rake中的字母“a" 发长元音的音:/ei/
Word Family(单词家族):为了让孩子在规律学习时能够举一反三,美国老师们会用到单词家族:即把具有相同字母组合规律的单词放在一起进行类比学习,还是用今天这部绘本中的单词举例,比如"fall, ball, all" 还有 "hook, look, book" 都属于同一组word family哦。
Sight Words(视觉词):Sight Words是那些不符合发音规律的单词,这些单词需要单独记忆。

The sun did not shine.
太阳不露面,大雨哗哗下,
It was too wet to play.
这样的天气没法出去玩耍。
So we sat in the house
我们只好坐在屋子里,
All that cold, cold, wet day.
整整一天又湿又冷,大雨哗啦啦。
I sat there with Sally.
我和萨莉并排坐着,
We sat there, we two.
两个人在那儿干坐,
And I said, “How I wish
还是我开口把话说,
We had something to do!”
“真想找点事儿来做做!”
Too wet to go out
大雨哗哗下,没法跑出去,
And too cold to play ball.
天气冷得很,球也没法踢,
So we sat in the house.
我们俩只好在屋子里待着,
We did nothing at all.
没有一点儿事情可做。
So all we could do was to

Sit! Sit! Sit! Sit!

And we did not like it.

Something went BUMP!

Our mother was out of the house
For the day.

And our fish came down, too.

He fell into a pot!

He said, “Do I like this?

This is not a good game,

Said our fish as he lit.

“Now look what you did!”

Said the fish to the cat.
小鱼儿对那只猫说道,
“Now look at this house!

You sank our toy ship,

Sank it deep in the cake.
它陷进蛋糕里。
You shook up our house

And you bent our new rake.

You SHOULD NOT be here
When our mother is not.

You get out of this house!”

Said the cat with a bow.

So, as fast as I could,
I went after my net.

And I said, “With my net
I can get them I bet.

I bet, with my net,

I can get those Things yet!”
把两个小家伙制服!”
Then I let down my net.
It came down with a PLOP!

And I had them! At last!

Those two Things had to stop.

Then I said to the cat,

Then he shut up the Things
In the box with the hook.

And the cat went away

With a sad kind of look.
看样子很是垂头丧气。
“That is good,” said the fish.

“He has gone away. Yes.

But your mother will come.

She will find this big mess!

And this mess is so big

And so deep and so tall,

We can not pick it up.

Then we saw him pick up
于是我们看着他统统捡起
All the things that were down.
掉落在地上的东西。
He picked up the cake,
他捡起了蛋糕、
And the rake, and the gown,
耙子和裙子,
And the milk, and the strings,
捡起了牛奶、风筝线、
And the books, and the dish,
书本和托盘,
And the fan, and the cup,
捡起了扇子、茶杯、
And the ship, and the fish.

And he put them away.

shine /ʃaɪn/
可表光亮、照耀、发光等意思,比如我们常说的太阳晒屁股了,在英语中也有固定表达rise and shine。叫宝贝起床时就可以说: Get up sleepyhead! Rise and shine!(小懒虫快起床,太阳都晒屁屁喽!)(米粒妈频道 : MilimaPinDao (点击可关注))
还有sunshine这个词想必大家都不陌生,Jimmie Davis的那首暖心金曲 You Are My Sunshine (你是我的阳光)不知融化了多少人的心。
对啦,还有这首超好听的儿歌:
trick /trɪk/
可表示诡计,花招,恶作剧。比如万圣节孩子们挨家挨户要糖果要礼物时都会说的trick or treat(意为不给糖就捣蛋),是必不可少的万圣节风俗。其中treat不是最常见的对待的意思,而是取其名词款待,招待之意。
另外,足球比赛中所说的“帽子戏法”,(即一名球员在一场比赛中三次击中对方球门)的英文表达就是Hat Trick(有时也写作Hat-trick)。
bow /baʊ/
表弯腰、鞠躬的意思,文中高帽猫脱帽鞠躬时出现了这个词。作动词时可以这样搭配bow to sb. (给某人鞠躬)。举个栗子:He bowed low to the little boy. 他给这个小男孩深鞠了一躬。
(在白宫,一个5岁的小男孩问奥巴马,“我想知道我的头发是不是和你的一样,”他对奥巴马说。奥巴马回答道:“为什么不摸一下,然后自己做判断?”)
bow作名词时还可以表示绳子或丝带打成的结,爸爸们应该都知道tie/taɪ/可表领带,那领结应该如何表达呢?没错了,就是bow tie.
get rid of
意思是摆脱、除去,在原文中是这样运用滴:You will have to get rid of Thing one and Thing Two. (你们必须摆脱一号小家伙和二号小家伙。)get rid of后面可以接sb.(某人)也可以加sth.(某物、某事), 非常实用。
看过英文原版书或者英美影视剧的粑粑麻麻不难发现,这个短语无论是在文学作品还是日常生活中出现频率都极高。
比如19世纪最伟大的英国作家 Oscar Wilde (奥斯卡·王尔德)有一句经典语录: The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it. (摆脱诱惑的唯一办法就是屈服于它)。(一如既往的cool boy
另外在日常对话中,我们也可以大胆滴用起来哟,下次宝贝再一边看电视一边吃饭的时候,可以提醒一句: You’d better get rid of this bad habit!(你最好改改这个臭毛病!
在读这部绘本的时候,还是要提醒各位爸爸妈妈别忘了我们第一期绘本营说过的几个小tip哦。首先,要充分利用米粒妈帮大家找的绘本的音频材料,通过反复听native speaker的地道发音来磨耳朵。
亲子共读过程中千万记得手要勤快,尤其是这本书用词简单但信息和细节很多,读到哪儿一定要给宝贝指到相应的图片细节。另外也别忘了之前强调过的TPR教学法,边读边引导宝贝做相应动作。

前面的三页交待了下雨天,兄妹俩呆坐窗前无所事事的故事背景,这里可以停下来帮助宝贝梳理一下已知信息——

Kid: I see a boy, a girl and a fish.(我看到了一个男孩,一个女孩还有一只鱼。)
Mom:Good job! Then what is the relationship between the two children? (很好!那你知道这两个小孩是什么关系吗?)

Mom: You are right! Do you remember the girl's name?(没错,还记得女孩叫什么名字吗?)

绘本第二页&第三页
Mom:Read the first sentence, please.(读读第一句吧。)
Kid: Oh, I got it- her name is Sally. (哦,我知道了,妹妹叫萨莉。)
Mom: Right! Can you tell me why they don't go out? (是滴,那你知道为啥他们俩不出去玩吗?)
Kid: Because it's raining. (因为下雨了。)
Mom:Great! Look at their face. They get surprised. Guess what makes them jump?(说的太好了,看看他们惊讶的表情,猜猜什么东西让他们吓了一跳?)
此处不用着急往后翻书,让宝贝独立思考一下,充分拓展宝贝的思维,发挥无限的想象力。
下面,我们再来深度解读一下绘本的第十二页和第十三页——
高帽猫进门后就开始了各种tricks的表演,首先就拿可怜的小鱼儿开刀。高潮迭起的把戏从这两幅内页开始,这里爸爸妈妈一定要抓住时机,和宝贝进行亲子互动,梳理信息,为理解后面的起承转合和word family打好地基。
Mom: Wow, Look! The cat is holding the fish up with the umbrella. (哇,快看,猫用雨伞把鱼儿举起来啦。)
此时可以利用手边的玩具或者书本引导宝贝一起做hold up的动作。
Mom: What does the fish say? (鱼儿这时说了什么?)
Kid: Put me down. (放我下来。)
同样的,和宝贝一起做put down的动作。
Mom: Yes! Does he like the trick? (小鱼儿喜欢这个把戏吗?)
Kid: Not at all. Look at his face. He is scared. (一点也不喜欢,看他的表情,他很害怕!)
Mom: Pretty good! He wants to make the cat go away. He doesn’t want to play. (没错,他想赶走这只猫,不想玩这些游戏。)
此处引出了前一页的内容,review了鱼儿从始至终对猫的态度。
接下来,爸爸妈妈可以先做个示范,引导宝贝自行归纳word family ——
Mom: Let’s play “word family” game. Mommy first. With the same letters “-ish”, “wish” and “fish” belong to a word family. (我们来玩“单词家族”游戏吧,妈妈先来。Wish和wish有着相同的字母组合-ish,属于同一单词家族。)
Kid: Let me see. Do “all” and “fall” belong to the same word family? (我想想,all和fall是不是也属于同一单词家族?)
Mom: Bingo! Give me five. (完全正确,击个掌!)
提醒各位爸爸妈妈,互动过程中要实时鼓励宝贝,调动其积极性。英语基础比较薄弱的宝贝,可以引导或协助其完成问答哈~
苏斯博士 & 全美读书日
关注英语启蒙的粑粑麻麻对Dr. Seuss苏斯博士的大名一定不陌生,他的作品有多经典呢?
英国著名作家J. K. Rowling(J.K.罗琳)的Harry Potter《哈利·波特》系列可以说家喻户晓,销量几乎超过了世界上所有作家,但有一人除外,他就是苏斯博士——
苏斯博士原名Theodor Seuss Geisel(西奥多·苏斯·盖索),1904年3月2日出生于美国斯普林菲尔德,一生创作了48种精彩教育绘本,是二十世纪最杰出的教育家,儿童文学家。
为了纪念他,1997年美国教育协会将苏斯博士的生日3月2日定为全美读书日(National Read Across America Day),每年的这一天从城市到乡镇每个社区都会举办各种形式的读书活动。
甚至连美国历届总统和总统夫人都会参与,为孩子们朗诵苏斯博士的经典作品。
奥兰多冒险岛乐园之苏斯主题区
在美国东部的旅游胜地奥兰多的冒险岛主题乐园(Universal's Islands of Adventure Theme Park)专门建立了苏斯主题区(Suess Landing),囊括了众多苏斯博士笔下的经典形象,当然也少不了咱们今天的主角戴高帽的猫。
连餐饮店的也均以其经典作品命名,像是Hop On Pop, Green Egges & Ham等等。此外,苏斯空中列车的最后一站被定名为Springfield,也就是苏斯博士的出生地斯普林菲尔德。
1. 韵律游戏——填空 & 涂色
苏斯博士的作品以韵律优美,朗朗上口。在前面的阅读指导中,我们也提到了自然拼读中的word family(单词家族)。亲子共读之后可以进行韵律游戏,比如让宝贝自己找出同一word family中的词汇。
米粒妈已经给爸爸妈妈们找好了素材,只需将下面的图片打印出来,鼓励宝贝自行选词或字母填空,还可以把相应的插图进行涂色,完成后开口朗读每组单词家族,对宝贝们掌握自然拼读大有裨益哦~
2. Listen to me 听我口令游戏
本书中出现了大量的方位介词,如in, out, on, up等,而 Listen to me 听我口令小游戏可以帮助宝贝对这些介词进行更加清晰的理解,玩法炒鸡简单:麻麻下口令,宝贝去执行。
心机girl米粒妈还经常用这一招在不知不觉中使米粒童鞋做了不少家务活儿,如果再让米粒和米粒爸比进行battle(比赛),那执行力更是强到没朋友。
举几个栗子:
Listen to me! Put these books on the shelf. 把书放到书架上。
Listen to me! Take the garbage out of the door.把垃圾带出门外。
Listen to me! Put all the toys into the box. 把玩具都放进箱子里。
一个小游戏既锻炼了宝贝的反应能力和动手能力,又复习了英语绘本的语言点,一举多得哦。
3. 课外拓展——The Cat in the Hat同名电影
时间充裕的话,米粒妈推荐各位爸爸妈妈和宝贝们一起观看这部绘本的同名电影The Cat in the Hat 由环球电影公司于2003年在北美发行。人物和情节在尊重原著的基础上进行了充实和丰富,是一部老少皆宜的喜剧影片。
