SA OpenProject+ 113开始报名 | I Think It Might Be Worng (我觉这得个可能是错的)

I Think It Might Be Worng

“I’m not interested in living in a fantasy world… What interests me is what the world would be like if we were free of conventional limits. [Through drawings,] Maybe I can show what could happen if we lived by a different set of rules.”

—Lebbeus Woods

We are living in interesting times. Consumption, big data, algorithms and machine learning is mostly dictating to us how we should live our life. A persuasion, architectured digitally, is feeding us content after content online, keeping us hooked in for hours in front of our screens, waiting for us to click the ads popping up, leaving us distracted, watching or buying things we don't know we needed. As we go down further into the rabbit hole of more and more hardcore content, we find ourselves in a dystopia created to manipulate us. On the other hand the collapsing distance between life and brands leads to ‘influencing’, in social media, which advertising companies pay for endorsements from people with strong online followings. This and others are examples of how our life is being transformed by companies like facebook, tencent, google or alibaba.

“The economic process continues to perpetuate domination over humans”, as famously said by Adorno. The late stage capitalism with its indignities and absurdities, together with inequality, creating companies with superpowers and shrinking the middle class. While all these are happening in the economy and in the digital world, how is our built environment faring or responding to this? How is the architecture being controlled, taken over or changing with the impact of capitalism?

This studio aims to look into “seemingly OK” surroundings. Regardless of business or building type, whether it is a restaurant or a supermarket, problematic, irrational or off-trajectory things can be found hiding in the secret corners of such surroundings. Many of these things are mostly neglected by users who don't have the training or awareness to distinguish the differences or, worst, they have been conditioned to not notice them.

With a receptive and critical eye to capitalism’s way of reducing complex and elaborate cultural relationships into surface level commodities to be used in spatial metanarratives, we will set off to find inefficiencies of existing buildings, as well as “affordances”, the action possibilities of the environment. We will do behavior monitoring, recording of user activities, generating diagrams and analysis of sites. We will look into spatial specificity, social relationship between space-time, ethics and consumption.

Students are encouraged to choose a specific site, a building or an interior space no larger than 300 sqm. Resulting projects can be a critique, an optimization or a proposal by adding or removing some of the design.
