深入解读

看到 odour 一词时，很容易联想起许多与之结尾相同的单词，诸如 your, four, hour, pour, sour, tour, flour ，以及小站（微信公众号：田间小站）之前推送过的 humour, scour, endeavour 等。

从上面两个外刊例句不难发现， odour 一词有两种拼法，其在英式英语和美式英语中分别拼作 odour 和 odor 。该词源自拉丁语 odor （气味），14世纪经英国法语 odour 进入英语后原指“香味、香气”。

到了14世纪末后， odour 开始发展出中性含义指“气味”，无论好闻与否，也就是既可以指“香味”，也可以指“臭味”，常意味着气味较强、较容易辨别或者说具有普遍的可感知性。现在则多指难闻的气味，暗示大量臭气弥漫扩散，比如体臭（body odour）、消除恶臭公害（abate the odour nuisance）。

从气味这个概念出发， odour 很自然地就被用来喻指“意味、味道、迹象”，主要指依附于某物的挥之不去的特质、印象或感觉，比如：

• 她说的每句话都假惺惺的。
  The odour of hypocrisy hung about everything she said.

将这个概念用在人身上时， odour 则可以进一步指“名声、名望”，常用 (be) in bad/ill odour 表示“名声不好；不得宠、不受欢迎”，以及用 (be) in good odour 表示“名声好；得宠、受欢迎”，比如：
