辨析instead of和rather than
在表示“不是…而是…”时，常会用到这两个短语。
(1) instead of之后的表述常常暗示人们惯常的做法，如：
Give me the coffee instead of the tea.
请把咖啡给我，不是茶。
（可能me通常是“喝茶”的）
They drove to their company instead of taking the bus.
他们开车去公司了，而没有坐公交车。
（They通常是“乘公交车去”）
Her mother washes clothes by hand instead of using the washing machine.
她母亲通常不用洗衣机洗衣服，而是手洗。
（按照一般人的推论和做法，应该是用洗衣机）
因此，这些句子更多地是要表述一种和通常情况不一样的事实或要求、想法、情况等。
(2) rather than可以表示一种意愿或取舍或选择，如：
Rather than stay here I would like to leave.
我宁可走开，也不愿待在这里。
Rather than cause trouble, he paid the loss.
他宁可赔偿损失，也不愿引起麻烦。
rather than还可以是对更符合实际情况的描述或说明，如：
The young man is an amateur chess player rather than a professional teacher.
与其说这位年轻人是位职业教师，倒不如说他是一位业余棋手。
He lay rather than sat in his armchair.
与其说他是坐在扶手椅里，不如说是躺在里面。
注：不要将rather than与rather…than…混淆，后者表示：
① 宁可…而不…，如：
I would rather leave than stay.
我宁愿走而不愿留。
This information is rather to be locked than disclosed.
消息将被封锁，而不会被透露出去。
② 描述实际情况，如：
The siren rather whispers than screams.
警报器呜呜做声，而不是尖声鸣叫。
