驻香港公署特派员谢锋在《纽约时报》网站发表署名文章：《与中国携手 守护全球公共卫生安全》。

It takes time to understand a new infectious disease, and any responsible government confronting such a challenge should act with rigor, strictly on the basis of science and evidence. China detected the outbreak, isolated the virus, sequenced its genome and shared the information with the World Health Organization and other countries in record time.

任何一种新型传染病都需要一个逐步深化认识的过程。任何一个负责任的国家应对重大传染病疫情都必须高度审慎、尊重科学、重视证据。中国发现疫情、隔离病毒、测序基因组并与世卫组织和全世界分享的速度是创纪录的。

无独有偶，《经济学人》也有一段很类似的描述：

许多专家称赞中国的努力。当然，与2003年的SARS相比，中国科学家在应对2019-ncov方面做得更好，他们迅速检测出了病毒，对其基因组进行了测序，批准了诊断工具，并通知了国际机构。

我们来感受一下effort的用法。

不要太拘泥于它的中文翻译，它的本质意思就是“为做某事而付出的努力”

Efforts通常后面会加to do sth., 

表示“为做某事付出的努力”

尽全力做某事

kit = a set of tools or equipment that you use for a particular purpose.

成套工具，成套设备

inform

大家对这个词都不陌生。我们来简单地复习一下。

Inform sb of sth. 通知某人某事

Please inform us of any changes of address. 地址若有变动请随时通知我们。

Inform oneself of sth. 自己通知自己某事，引申为“了解，熟悉”

We need time to inform ourselves throughly of the problem.

我们需要时间，以对这个问题有个透彻的了解。

【拓展】isolate 和quarantine的区别

我们可以来看看英英释义：

Quarantine: If a person or animal is in quarantine, they are being kept separate from other people or animals for a set period of time, usually because they have or may have a disease that could spread. （可能患病）

Isolation: denoting a hospital or ward for patients with contagious or infectious dieases.（已经患病）

我们看看美国CDC官网对这两个词的解释：

所以总结起来看，它们的区别在于，quarantine隔离的是疑似人员（即医学观察），而isolation隔的是确诊病人（即医学隔离）。

Dampen

Dampen = to make sth such as a feeling or a reaction less strong 抑制，控制，减弱

None of the setbacks could dampen his enthusiasm for the project.

任何挫折都不能减弱他对这个项目的热情

同义词还有：

a. curb

我们认为复工复产是有效应对新冠肺炎疫情、保持经济平稳运行的重要保障。

We believe that the resumption is an important guarantee to effectively curb the COVID-19 epidemic and maintain a stable economic operation.

b. contain

We should take measures to contain the epidemic.

我们必须采取措施防止流行病的蔓延

c. check 控制，抑制，防止…发生

The government is determined to check the growth of public spending

政府决心要控制公共开支的增长。

d. restrain

John managed to restrain his anger. 约翰努力压制住自己的怒气。

Boast

Boast作动词时，表示“自夸，自吹自擂”

She is always boasting about how wonderful her child are.

她总是夸耀她的孩子们多么出色

同时，它还有另外一个意思：

If someone or something can boast a particular achievement or possession, they have achieved or possess that thing. 取得成功，拥有

其实意思就是have.但是它比have要多一层意思，那就是boast一般表示拥有令人自豪或者引以为傲的事物。

The houses will boast the latest energy-saving technology.

这些房屋将采用最新节能技术

《经济学人》中也有这样一个句子：

Within living memory his home town, the capital of Sichuan province, had boasted more than 600 teahouses, or chaguan.

Pool

Pool不仅有“水池”的意思，它还可以表示“一拨人，一笔钱，一笔物资”等。

原文中a talent pool of more than 170 million people with higher education or professional skills的”pool”就是指“一拨人”

Talent pool就可以表示企业或社会的“人才库”

The available pool of healthy manpower was not as large as military officials had expected.

一拨可用的健康劳动力人数达不到军方官员的期望。

sound

当sound做形容词时，意思非常丰富。

a.sound = sensible = that you can rely on and that will probably give good results

明智的，合理的，正确的，可靠的

He gave me some very sound advice.

他给了我一些非常合理的忠告。

b. sound = good and accurate 不错的，实实在在的

a sound piece of writing 一篇不错的文章

c. sound = deep and peaceful 酣畅的，香甜的

He is a sound sleeper. 他是那种睡得很沉的人。

这一段很经典，我们不妨背诵下来：
