Doctoral Researcher Position as part of the Jena Cluster of Excellence “Balance of the Microverse” (3.5 years, 65% TV-L E13):
Timeline:
Application deadline: 20th March, 2019
Recruitment meeting in Jena: April/May 2019
Starting: Summer 2019
Project: The basis of resilience in leaf microbiota.
Plant leaves are critical for the function and survival of plants, but they are highly exposed to external threats including pathogens and herbivores. Microorganisms in both plant roots and leaves play important roles in stabilizing against biotic stress. In contrast to roots, where plants actively secrete compounds that nurture specific microorgansisms, we understand little about how leaf microbiota are recruited and how they stabilize leaves against biotic stress. This project aims to disrupt leaf microbiome recruitment in order to understand the “normal” leaf microbiome and its importance for disease susceptibility. The project will combine field studies with collaborative lab-based studies using synthetic plant microbiota and isolated microbial consortia.
We expect:
An MSc (or equivalent) in natural sciences (Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or closely related fields) or biotechnology-related fields. Candidates in the final stages of obtaining their degree are eligible to apply
desirable methodological skills: excellent background in microbial ecology, microbiology, biochemistry and/or plant sciences, as well as experimental design and analytical methods. Knowledge of a programming language (R, perl, python) and unix-based computational tools is advantageous but not required.
highly motivated individuals with an interest in joining one of the interdisciplinary research areas of the Microverse Cluster
the abililty to work creatively and independently towards developing your own research project
an integrative and cooperative personality with enthusiasm for actively participating in the dynamic Microverse community
excellent English communication skills, both written and spoken
We offer:
The affiliated early career program of the Jena School for Microbial Communication (JSMC) offers an ambitious, structured and interdisciplinary graduate training based on top-level fundamental research.
a highly communicative atmosphere within a scientific network providing top-level research facilities
a comprehensive mentoring program and soft skill courses for early career researchers
Jena – City of Science: a young and lively town with dynamic business activities, innovative scientific centers within the Friedrich Schiller University, numerous non-university research institutions and a vibrant local cultural agenda
The Friedrich Schiller University Jena is an equal opportunity employer. Disabled persons with comparable qualifications will receive preferential status.
Applications are exclusively accepted via the JSMC Online Application Portal:
