People either place their number, or take a number, from the blind boxes for a fee

An emerging industry targeting lovelorn members of Gen Z has taken off in China, allowing people to randomly purchase the social media contacts of a potential partner for just 1 yuan.

Dating blind boxes first appeared at night markets in some major Chinese cities several months ago, with stall owners presenting two boxes, one for males and another for females.

Customers pay to get a WeChat account number from one box or leave his or her number. Having obtained the contacts of WeChat, the most widely used social media app in China, people can get in touch with the owner of the WeChat account and try blind dating, according to the report.

“After leaving my contacts in the box, I am curious who will pick me up. The whole process is like opening a blind box. It is so stimulating,” one person, whose gender was not released.

Yan Bing, director of Beijing-based Yuntong Law Firm, said since customers are willing to put their contacts in the box, there is no problem with stalls sharing their contacts with other customers.

“But if they leak that information for other purposes, like selling it to advertisement distributors, it is illegal,” said Yan.

Chinese mainland reports four locally transmitted COVID-19 cases

The Chinese mainland on Tuesday reported four new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases, the National Health Commission said in its daily report on Wednesday.

Of the four local cases, two were reported in Liaoning and the other two in Yunnan, the commission said.

Tuesday also saw reports of 18 imported cases in six provincial-level regions, it said.

No new suspected cases or new deaths related to COVID-19 were reported on Tuesday, said the commission.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases on the mainland had reached 98,546 by Tuesday, including 958 patients still receiving treatment, of whom seven were in severe condition.

A total of 92,952 patients had been discharged from hospitals following recovery on the mainland, and 4,636 had died as a result of the virus.

A total of 16 asymptomatic cases were newly reported Tuesday, all from outside the mainland. There were a total of 489 asymptomatic cases, including 360 arriving from outside the mainland, under medical observation as of Tuesday.

Australia to reopen borders to foreign students, workers

Australia announced on Monday that it will reopen to foreign students and skilled workers from December, easing some of the world's most stringent COVID-19 pandemic travel restrictions. 

Twenty months after Australia slammed shut its borders, some visa holders - as well as Japanese and South Korean citizens - will be able to enter from December 1.

The government of Prime Minister Scott Morrison lifted restrictions on Australians traveling overseas in October, sparking a flood of travel bookings for the southern hemisphere summer. 

But Morrison had pointedly refused to relax travel rules for most non-Australians. 

That decision left an estimated 1.4 million skilled visa holders stuck in Australia due to the pandemic, unable to return if they decided to leave. 

Business groups had lobbied hard for vaccinated visa holders to be allowed to return, as they struggle to fill jobs and gird for the beginning of a third year of restrictions. 

Among those most vocal in calling for rules to be further relaxed was the beleaguered university sector. 

While some Australian states still require quarantine, vaccinated Australians, some visa holders and citizens of Japan, South Korea and Singapore will now be able to visit Australia with only a pre-departure negative COVID-19 test.

自之前澳洲宣布11月1日起开放国门，相继的公布疫苗接种要求后，就在昨天上午，澳洲政府宣布：从2021年12月1日起，符合澳洲“完全接种者”要求的特定签证持有者均可以入境澳洲，不用申请入境赦免。

新增的这些可以入境的签证有：难民保护类签证，工签（包括482/485/491等），以及学生签证和学生家长陪读签证。此前能够自动赦免入境的只有澳洲公民、PR和188类签证持有人。
