Mandarin Team - Middle/High School 中文教学 - 初/高中部

At CISB, we offer Mandarin courses from elementary through middle/high school. Last week's CISBe In The Know focused on our Elementary Mandarin program. This week, we continue our focus on our Middle/High Mandarin program. 

在CISB的小学至初/高中,我们都为学生们提供了中文课程。在上一期,我们介绍了小学部的中文组。这一周我们将继续为大家介绍初高中部中文组的具体课程。

What subject(s) do you teach at CISB? Could you introduce your team?

在CISB教那门课? 向我们介绍下你的组员?

I am Charles Wu, I teach Chinese Acquisition in CISB. There are 8 Chinese teachers in CISB middle high school: Mary Wang , Lily Li , Lily Tong, Jessie Chen, Kate Wu, Kelly Li, Elenor Liu.

在CISB,我是教初高中初级中文的老师 Charles Wu。初高中的中文组,现有8名中文老师,他们分别是Mary Wang , Lily Li , Lily Tong, Jessie Chen, Kate Wu, Kelly Li, Elenor Liu 。


What type of learning do you conver in class? Do you have any interesting activities? What are they?

课堂中都会涉及哪些内容知识? 有安排哪些有趣的活动?都有什么?

At CISB , our Chinese Acquisition do not have a determined textbooks, we choose the materials from a variety of publishers according to our curriculum, the reference textbooks include  Easy Step to Chinese, Learn Chinese With Me, Happy Chinese, Magic Tour In Chinese , Discovering Chinese, etc.

In the four basic skills, listening and speaking are relatively easy for students to get, reading and writing are challenge because Chinese characters are quite different from alphabetical languages.  We spend a lot of time to practice reading and writing

Generally, we begin by setting up a theme, then we practice using different activities.  In the end, students need to demonstrate how they will function in proper situations. 

For instance, we are learning Culture and Tradition, we first introduce how Chinese people celebrate and what they do, we can use different ways to get their interests, like showing pictures (to see firework, dumpling making and Spring couplet, traditional painting, )  watching video(to see lion dancing and dragon dancing, ) , gestures presenting (kou tou, New Year Greeting, giving  red envelopes). Students are asked to memorize 3-5 words each day, and do word tests now then, gradually, students can do visuals description, picture talk, similar topic readings, etc.

在CISB,我校中文的学习教材是参考不同语言出版社图书和根据IB国际课程的要求,所编辑设定的。这些参考书如Easy Step to Chinese, Learn Chinese With Me, Happy Chinese,  Magic Tour In Chinese , Discovering Chinese,等。

在语言的四项基本学习中,听和说对学生来说是比较容易掌握的,读和写是有挑战性的,因为汉字与字母语言有很大的不同。我们会花很多时间练习读和写,但有时候学生还是很容易忘记汉汉字的写法。

一般来说,我们会先对内容进行讲解,然后通过不同的课堂活动练习,让学生运用到合适的场景当中。例如,我们在学习文化和传统,首先介绍中国人如何庆祝节日和节日都会做什么。老师会展示相关图片(烟花、饺子的制作和春联)视频(舞龙狮)、礼仪习俗(叩头、新年祝福、发红包)等。同时,我们会要求学生每天背3-5个中文字,然后会有单词考试。逐渐地,学生可以进行图片描述和相似的主题文章等。

 

What type of content do you teach students?

初高中的中文课程,学生们都会学到哪些知识?

Our Chinese Acquisition focuses on daily and survival expressions.  Teachers will also introduce some simple famous Chinese ancient poetry to build  appreciation.  Pinyin is a phonetic system, in the beginning stage, students need to use pinyin to help with pronouncing characters, but they need to gradually move to reading words without pinyin. Some pinyin are a bit hard for students to pronounce, like e, v,  j, q, x, zi, ci, si, zhi , chi, ri.

在我们初级课程的内容里,主要是学习关于一些日常生活的表述。教师们也会简单介绍一些著名的中国古代诗歌欣赏。拼音是一个语音系统,在开始学习阶段,学生需要用拼音来帮助发音,并大声读出来,熟练后无需拼音即可读出中文。有些拼音对学生来说有点难发音,如 e, v, j, q, x, zi, ci, si, zhi, chi, ri。


In order to understand local Chinese culture, do you have any field trips? Where do you usually go?

为了更好的了解中国当地文化,我们会安排相关的外出郊游活动么?通常都会组织去哪里?

We introduce Chinese history, buildings and cultures.  Our Chinese department often organizes field trips to show students treasures like the Summer Palace, World park, Temple of Heaven, Nan Luo Gu Xiang.

我们会介绍中国的历史、建筑和文化,中文组的老师们经常会组织学生们郊游,让他们亲自体验和感受北京本土文化,如去颐和园、世界公园、天坛、南锣鼓巷等。


Chinese New Year is coming soon, do you have any special celebrations for it in class? Or is there any event at school?

中国春节即将到来,在班里有组织各种庆祝活动么?全校内有什么特殊活动安排?

Students are going to make dumpling , write 福word,  do paper-cutting.

为了迎接即将到来的春节。在课堂上,学生们要会有一些特殊的活动。比如做饺子,写福字和做剪纸。


CISB is made up a lot of different nationalities, how do you help students with different levels of Mandarin skills?

在CISB中我们有来自世界各地的学生,如何来帮助这些学生学习中文?

For those who are just beginning to learn Chinese, they need pinyin to help them read.  They start to write using basic characters, they learn with picture labels and simple story books. Teachers mainly use differentiation to meet different level students’ need.  Actually, for listening and speaking, Chinese is as easy as other languages, but when talking about reading and writing, it is a bit of a challenge for those who come from alphabetical language speaking countries.

对于刚刚开始学习中文的学生,他们需要用拼音来帮助他们阅读。慢慢开始写简单的基本汉字,用图片记忆形式帮助学习中文,读一些简单的故事书。我们老师会根据学生的不同情况来进行教学上的安排。对于中文学习来讲,在听和说方面的学习相对简单一些。但是在读和写方面,对于母语不是中文的学生来讲是一个挑战。


When students study Chinese in DP program, in which level can they achieve?

对于学校DP课程中中文的学生,他们的中文会学习到怎么的一个深度?

In the Diploma Program, there are three levels, one is called Ab Initio , the others are called language B and Language A. 

Ab Initio students should be able to write an essay of 120 characters and hold a 10 minute conversations with a teacher about a specific topic.  They should be able to compare thier native culture and Chinese culture within 420 characters.

In Language B course, students develop the ability to communicate in Chinese through the study of language, themes and texts. In addition, the study of two literary works is required at HL. 

The assessment consists of two parts: External assessment and Internal assessment. The External assessment tests the productive skills — writing and receptive skills— separate sections for listening and reading. The Internal assessment tests the oral communication skills— a conversation with the teacher, based on a visual stimulus, followed by discussion based on an additional theme.

In order to achieve Language A course, students need to complete different assessments, such as textual analysis, essay, written task, individual oral commentary, and further oral activity.  

在IBDP的课程中,中文分为3级。它们分别是Ab Initio,language B和language A。

 Abnito级别的学生可以写120个字左右的小作文,在10分钟内和老师进行特定话题的探讨对话,并可以用420个字比较自己的本土文化和中国文化。

在language B课程中,学生通过对语言、主题和课文的学习,培养用汉语进行交流的能力。此外,HL还需要学习两篇文学作品。考试评估由两部分组成: 一个是书面评估,另一个是口语考试。书面评估测试主要考察学生的写作、听力和阅读的技巧。口语测试的是口头交流技巧。如与老师的对话,根据所展示的图片等,进行一些讨论。

为了通过Language A的课程,学生需要通过以下不同的考试内容,如文章分析、问题简答完成360个字的论文、文学鉴赏评论和口语对话。
