At the end of 2020, the Chinese government unveiled a raft of anti-monopoly rules aimed at curbing the monopolistic practice of leading tech corporations, which political spectators have termed the “big clampdown”. The official agenda of the “clampdown” is to contain the negative socio-economic impacts of techno capitalism that has intensified in the last decade, spearheaded by private companies such as Tencent and Alibaba. 

The official stance also emboldened civil organizations to vocalize their long-held objections towards the rampant growth of techno-capitalism that has infiltrated almost every aspect of urban life. In mid 2021, ZhiCheng Public Interest Lawyers filed a civil lawsuit against Tencent on account of its violation of the rights of minors in its popular video game product - "Honor of Kings". Since its release, the graphic video game has attracted more than 82.5 million users of all ages, including a large number of juveniles. In recent years, parents, educators have become increasingly skeptical of the game because it is strongly associated the internet addiction crisis amongst the left-behind-children and is believed to violate the "12+" age-appropriate content setting, promote violence and sexual abuse.

In the last ten years of China’s much-celebrated internet technology advancement, video-game addiction is just one example of its side-effects, alongside cyber fraud, data insecurity and more. How did pre-existing societal characteristic and policy gaps allowed for conflicts to occur and develop? What does the "Honor of Kings" case study tell us about the impact of techno-capitalism on the most the vulnerable communities in China? How can these problems be addressed by government intervention and civil activism? Join our speaker series to find out.
