Special issue information:

Digital technology is revolutionizing English language education, with artificial intelligence (AI) at the forefront. This transformative AI wave is demonstrated through its integration into various educational tools like intelligent tutoring systems, AI chatbots, automatic speech recognition for speaking practice, automatic writing evaluation, automated scoring systems, learning analytics, and educational data mining (Chen et al., 2020; Huang et al., 2023). AI technologies offer immense possibilities for revolutionizing the learning and teaching process by providing personalized and adaptive learning experiences, visualizing students' learning progress, offering automated assessments and immediate feedback on their performance, and recommending suitable resources (e.g., Su et al, 2023).

Despite the significant potential of AI to revolutionize language learning, there is a relative paucity of research that explores the instructional design and pedagogical strategies associated with AI-powered language learning tools. Consequently, the effects of AI-integrated methodologies on students' language learning outcomes and their interaction with traditional pedagogical approaches remain largely unexplored. Therefore, there is an urgent need to investigate how language teachers perceive and engage with AI in their teaching and how such engagement might impact students' English language learning processes and outcomes.

This special issue will include empirical research and review studies on various facets of AI in English language education, such as teachers' perspectives on AI implementation, AI's role in curricula design, and its use in supporting special educational needs. The issue also explores students' perspectives on AI's role in enhancing engagement, supporting self-regulated learning, and personalizing learning experiences. Furthermore, the issue will delve into the future implications of AI in English language education, providing valuable insights for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers in educational technology and applied linguistics. It will encourage interdisciplinary collaboration by welcoming contributions that integrate theories and practices from fields such as education, psychology, and applied linguistics.

This special issue holds substantial relevance to System's audience, delving into AI's transformative role in English language education. It explores AI's role in English language education, examining its integration into pedagogical strategies, its impact on learning processes and outcomes, and teachers' perceptions of its applications. Given System's commitment to exploring educational technology's application in foreign language teaching and learning, this focus on AI, a powerful game-changer in the field, will offer readers an in-depth perspective on its evolving influence in English language instruction.

Areas and Types

This special issue seeks empirical research and review studies to elucidate the roles, applications, opportunities, challenges, and impacts of AI in English language education. It aims to enrich the applied linguistics field by shedding light on the integration of AI into English language teaching and learning, providing valuable pedagogical insights. We invite submissions on topics which include, but not limited to, the following:

Teachers' Perspectives on:

Probing English language teachers' concerns about AI implementation in language classrooms.

Enhancing English language teachers' Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) for effective integration of AI in language instruction.

Designing AI-oriented curricula for contemporary English language education.

Leveraging AI to bolster formative assessment practices in English classrooms.

Utilizing AI to support English language learners with special educational needs.

Students' Perspectives on:

  1. Incorporating student voice in the development and implementation of AI in English language learning.

  2. Bolstering learner engagement through AI-driven strategies.

  3. Supporting self-regulated language learning using AI-powered tools.

  4. Providing real-time feedback in English language learning with AI systems.

  5. Exploring AI's role in personalizing English language learning experiences.

Insights of AI in English Language Education

  1. Forecasting the future of AI in English language education: Trends and implications.

  2. Deciphering the role of AI in the future of English language education: Opportunities and challenges.

We invite studies leveraging diverse theoretical perspectives and methodologies to scrutinize the outlined issues in English language education. Submissions that amalgamate interdisciplinary viewpoints, integrating theories and practices from fields such as applied linguistics, education, and psychology are highly appreciated. Specifically, we are keen on manuscripts establishing links between AI-enabled instruction, curriculum design, and students' language learning processes and outcomes across varied educational settings globally.
