I Think It Might Be Worng 2.0

课程简介“I’m not interested in living in a fantasy world… What interests me is what the world would be like if we were free of conventional limits. [Through drawings,] Maybe I can show what could happen if we lived by a different set of rules.”—Lebbeus Woods

We are living in interesting times. Pandemic, consumption, big data, algorithms, governments, social media and more are dictating to us how and where we should live our life. Aside from this persuasion, collapse of time and space through home isolation and excessive online presence are examples of how our life is being transformed by companies like billibilli, facebook, tencent, youtube or alibaba.

“The economic process continues to perpetuate domination over humans”, as famously said by Adorno. The late stage capitalism with its indignities and absurdities, together with inequality, creates persons with soaring fortunes like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Jack Ma as well as their companies with superpowers, while shrinking the middle class. While all these cryptocurrency rush, short sells and margin calls, happening in markets, the ripples of the events of the real world impacting the digital world might be finally making its way back impacting and prompting a “new” world.

This studio aims to look at that new, namely how our built environment faring or responding to this? How is the architecture being controlled, taken over or changing with the impact of capitalism, pandemic and changing position of technology into “seemingly OK” surroundings. Regardless of business or building type, whether it is a restaurant or a supermarket, usage related, problematic, irrational or off-trajectory things can be found hiding in the secret corners of such surroundings. These could be neglected by users who don't have the training or awareness to distinguish the differences.

With a receptive and critical eye to globalism and capitalism’s reducing complex and elaborate cultural relationships into surface level commodities to be used in spatial metanarratives, we will set off to find inefficiencies of existing buildings, as well as “affordances”, the action possibilities, of the environment. We will do behavior monitoring, recording of user activities, generating diagrams and analysis of sites. We will look into spatial specificity, social relationship between space-time, ethics and consumption.

Students are encouraged to choose a specific site, a building or an interior space strictly no larger than 300 sqm. Resulting projects can be a critique, an optimization or a proposal by adding or removing some of the design.
