When Seeking Teachers, Do Not Judge Them by Their Appearance
愚人交朋结友，往往会观察对方的财产、地位、相貌，
When fools make friends, they often consider others’ wealth, position, and appearance.
而如今寻找上师好像也是如此，
It seems that nowadays, seeking teachers is also like this.
若其父母有一定地位，人也长得比较庄严，
If the teachers’ parents are distinguished, and they themselves appear rather dignified,
很多人就喜欢当他的弟子。
then many people would like to be their disciple.
在古代，活佛长相并不一定端庄妙好。
In ancient times, tulkus were not necessarily elegant and dignified in appearance.
像大名鼎鼎的布顿大师，是夏鲁派的创始人，
Take the famous Master Butön, who founded the Zhalu lineage.
他生下来时嘴巴、鼻子都很大，异常难看。
At birth, his mouth and nose were both huge and incredibly ugly.
他的母亲特别伤心：“我只有这一个孩子，却长得如此丑陋，谁愿意见到他呢？”
His mother was very sad: “I have only this one child, but he is so repulsive. Who would wish to see him?”
没想到，这个婴儿竟然开口说道：“布顿巴（藏文音译，意为这个孩子谁都可见），我并不计较这些！”
Unexpectedly, the baby opened his mouth and said, “Butönpa [literally, ‘this child can be seen by anyone’], I do not care about these at all!”
结果，他长大之后成了一代高僧。
In the end, he grew up to be one of the most eminent monks of his age.
在格鲁派的历史中，其貌不扬的高僧大德也为数不少。
In the history of the Geluk tradition, there were also many eminent monks and masters who were far from handsome.
其实，若是娶媳妇，选个美貌一点的也可以，
If you are looking for a wife, it is all right to choose a good-looking one.
但依止大德就不一定非要如此了。
But when it comes to following a master, this is not really necessary.
以貌取人，这是愚人的观察方法，
Judging by appearance is a fool’s method of observation.
作为有智慧的人，理应注重内在胜于外在
As someone with wisdom, you ought to place greater value on the inside than the outside
——只有详细观察了上师的悲心、智慧后，再决定是否去依止，
—only after you have carefully examined a teacher’s compassion and wisdom should you decide whether or not to follow that teacher.
这样才会比较可靠。
This is the more reliable way.
