永生难忘的美好时光

现代大学教育之发展，瞬息万变。而社会国家及宇宙太空事物，无时不在变动之中。故培育人才，如何以适应社会之需要，如何以改进社会之事业，以达到杜会福利之最高标准，大学教育之责任重大也——陈炳权（广州大学创校校长）

    Dear Colleagues,

     I was a visiting professor of the School of PublicAdministration at Guangzhou University in southern China, from September 2014to the end of January 2015 (one university semester), and then continued toteach as a visiting professor until 2018. Each year, I gave a graduate seminarcourse on population health, and participated in the annual conference of theGuangzhou University School of Public Administration.

     It was a rewarding experience in my professionallife, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I was fortunate to have theopportunity to teach young Chinese university students at a time China isgoing through remarkable social and economic transformations. In 2014-15, Ioffered two undergraduate courses: (1) Population Health and SocialCapital, (2) Sociology of Health and Illness; and a graduate seminarcourse on (3) Issues in Urban Social Theory. In addition to theseregular courses at Guangzhou University, I gave several lectures atneighbouring universities, such as Sun Yat-sen University, and the Universityof Foreign Studies, where I discussed several topics on the Canadian experiencein publicly funded healthcare, volunteering, and the role of community organizationsin promoting population health.  I also gave lectures to the officials ofthe Guangzhou Local Government on various aspects of the Canada Health Act, andpublicly funded healthcare in Canada. These are very important subjects inChina at present, as the government officials and the academics are trying todevelop policy-frameworks to address various social and health issues.

      Although there are many foreigners teachingEnglish at Guangzhou University, I was the first foreigner to teachacademic subjects. The university officials and my colleagues at the School ofPublic Administration at Guangzhou University deeply appreciated mycontribution to the university's academic program, and invited me to continueteaching these courses in the future.

      We also organized an international conference onthe role of community organizations in population health at GuangzhouUniversity, which was held on December 14-16, 2014. The conference wasco-sponsored by the School of Policy Studies at Queen's University, Kingston,Canada, where I am an adjunct faculty member, teaching population health.A number of my colleagues from Queen's University --Drs. Kim Nossal, KathyBrock, and Wenjue Lu Knutsen--spoke at the conference on various aspects of therole of community organizations in population health.

     The International Office of the Guangzhou Universityin charge of the visiting scholars made every effort to accommodate me in theuniversity community, and to make me feel welcome. They were also instrumentalin making the conference a successful event. I am very grateful to them for alltheir kind help.

     The students of Guangzhou Universityare very keen learners, and they demonstrated their ability to comprehendthe lecture-materials easily, notwithstanding that lectures weregiven only in English. Teaching them was truly a rewarding experience.

     My student-assistant, Andy (ChenMing) was an indefatigable helper, who ensured that everything will go assmoothly as possible at all times. Without the kind help of Andy, and manyother students, especially--Henry (Liu Chan) Jasmine Yang, Qiaoting Liu(ChowChow), Toto and Tim, life at Guangzhou University could have beenvery difficult for me. I am very grateful to each and everyone of you. Wish youall the best in your future endeavours!!!

      I was again a visiting professor of the School ofPublic Administration at Guangzhou University in southern China, fromOctober to December 2016.  It continues to be a rewardingexperience in my professional life, which I thoroughly enjoy. I wasfortunate to have the opportunity to teach young Chinese universitystudents at a time China is going through remarkable social and economic transformations.I offered two graduate courses: (1) Social Security and theWelfare State and (2) Epidemiological Transitions and PopulationHealth. In addition to these regular courses at Guangzhou University, Igave several lectures at neighbouring universities, such as Guizhou Universityat Guiyang, and Zhengzhou University, where I discussed several topics on theCanadian experience in publicly funded healthcare. These are very importantsubjects in China at present, as the government officials and the academics aretrying to develop policy-frameworks to address various social and healthissues.

Also, in addition to these lectures, I published anacademic paper on China with a Chinese colleague (Dr. Bo Liu) - "EpidemiologicalTransition and Population Health: Understanding Social Determinant of Health inChina" in the Journal of Illness, Crisis and Loss, 2017.

     My colleagues of the School of Public Administrationat Guangzhou University treated me like a member of the family from the veryfirst day of my arrival at Guangzhou. Dean Dr. Chen Tan and Professor Bo Liu, Mrs.Fu Yan along with all my colleagues (too many to mention by name), made everyeffort to ensure my wellbeing at Guangzhou. Further, they made everyeffort that I will experience diverse cultural and social environments of manydifferent regions of China, which enabled me to acquire a broader understandingof China’s culture, history, and most of all, the generosity of the Chinesepeople. This made it very difficult for me to leave China after each visit, butI cherish the good memories of my time in China in general, and, in particular,at Guangzhou University!

教在中国

       亲爱的同事们：

      从2014年9月至2015年1月（一个大学学期），我成为了中国南方广州大学公共管理学院的客座教授，然后继续担任客座教授直到2018年。每年我都开设了“人口健康”研究生课程，并经常参加了广州大学公共管理学院举办的各种学术会议。

      在我的职业生涯中，这是一次非常有意义的经历。幸运的是，有机会在中国正经历着巨大的社会和经济变革的时候给年轻的中国大学生讲课，我对此非常享受。在2014-2015年度，我开设了两个本科生课程：（1）人口健康与社会资本；（2）健康与疾病社会学；以及关于（3）城市社会理论问题的研究生Seminar课程。除了在广州大学开设这些常规课程外，我还在中山大学和广东外语外贸大学等邻近大学做过几次讲座，在那里我讨论了有关加拿大公共资助的医疗保健、志愿服务和社区组织在促进人口健康中的作用。我还就《加拿大健康法》以及在加拿大公共资助的医疗保健向广州地方政府官员进行了讲座。由于政府官员和学者们正在努力制定政策框架以解决各种社会和健康问题，因此这些话题在中国目前是非常重要的主题。

尽管广州大学有很多外国人在教英语，但我是第一个教授学术课程的外国人。广州大学公共管理学院的领导和我的同事们非常感谢我对大学学术课程所作的贡献，并邀请我将来继续教授这些课程。

我们还于2014年12月14日至16日在广州大学举办了一次关于“社区组织在人口健康中的作用”的国际会议。该会议是由加拿大金斯敦女王大学政策研究学院共同发起的。我是兼职教职人员，专门教授人口健康。女王大学的许多同事-Dr. Kim Nossal，Kathy Brock和Wenjue Lu Knutsen在会议上都谈到了社区组织在人口健康中的作用的各个方面问题。

广州大学国际交流与合作处办公室负责访问学者的工作人员尽一切努力使我适应大学社区的生活，并让我感到宾至如归。他们还经常帮助我们和我们公共管理学院，让国际会议得到顺利举行。我非常感谢他们所做的一切帮助！

广州大学的学生非常热爱学习。尽管讲座仅以英语授课，但他们仍表现出了很强的理解能力，跟他们一起学习、一起成长确实是一种愉快而又有益的经历。我的学生助理安迪（陈明，音译）是一位很不错的助手，他确保我的工作和生活都能在任何时候都尽可能顺利进行。如果没有安迪（Andy）和其他许多学生的帮助，尤其是亨利（刘成）、茉莉（Jasmine Yang）、刘巧婷（ChowChow）、托托（Toto）和蒂姆（Tim），广州大学的生活对我来说可能非常困难。我非常感谢他们每一个人的帮助。 祝他们在未来的工作中一切顺利！

从2016年10月到2016年12月，我再次成为广州大学公共管理学院的客座教授。这对我的职业生涯仍然是一次非常有意义的经历，我非常享受。幸运的是，再次有机会在中国正经历着巨大社会和经济变革的时候给年轻的中国大学生讲课。我提供了两个研究生课程：（1）社会保障和福利国家，以及（2）流行病学转变和人口健康。除了在广州大学进行的这些常规课程外，我还在中国其他的大学进行了多次演讲，例如贵州大学和郑州大学，在那儿，我讨论了有关加拿大公共医疗保健经验的几个议题。由于政府官员和学者们正在努力制定政策框架以解决各种社会和健康问题，因此这些在中国目前是非常重要的主题。

此外，除了这些讲座，我还在2017年与一位中国同事（刘波博士）发表了关于中国的学术论文《流行病学转变与人口健康：了解中国健康的社会决定因素》。

从我到达广州的第一天起，我在广州大学公共管理学院的同事们就把我当作一家人一样对待。院长陈潭博士、刘波博士、付艳博士以及我的所有广州大学公共管理学院同事（名字不胜枚举）竭尽全力确保我在广州生活舒适。此外，他们竭尽所能让我体验中国许多不同地区的多元文化和社会环境，让我对中国的文化、历史以及最重要的是中国人民的热情获得了更广泛的了解，这使得我每次访问后都很难离开中国。因此，我对在中国的生活，特别是在广州大学的美好时光，永远怀有美好的回忆！
