Kimberly

Becoming a Teacher

In truth it had never been my intention to follow the same profession as my parents, my father an English teacher and my mother a music teacher. When you are young and your whole family life (including aunts, uncles and grandparents too) seems to revolve around eating, sleeping and talking about education, it is often the first thing you want to escape from and the last thing you wish to embrace.

Coming home each day from my own schooling to witness exhausted parents falling asleep in front of the television each night can have that effect on you.

So much so in fact, that I even considered the rather (or so it seems now) frightening career path of becoming a librarian at one point, until on the way to an interview at some remote university in Wales, I saw the light and parted ways with the train some 20 miles distant from its destination and spent the rest of the day travelling back to my parents and working out what I was going to say to them now.

As a penance for wasting so much time, and perhaps as a last possible gambit from my increasingly exasperated father, he ‘persuaded’ me to come to his school and help him in his class – just to see if I might be encouraged that teaching was not such a heinous crime against humanity after all.

I cannot explain over the next few days the transformation this had on my thinking and then my subsequent life – and still does. Typically (and slightly annoyingly) my father was wonderful in front of pupils. He was clear, direct, passionate, inspiring and in turn the children in his care loved being in his lessons.

They felt special, knew they were learning new skills, concepts, and knowledge but also that they were respected and appreciated. Along with a tinge of adolescent jealousy also came pride, interest and amazement that there was a job out there that could hold such importance and relevance to others.

That here was a role which literally did change young people’s lives and channelled and clarified their thinking, beliefs, ideas, and their own passions. All done with humour, love, and care.

To tell your parents, after years of adamantly following the stubborn line that you would rather be a brick labourer than teach – that you had been wrong all along and were glad to be wrong, was not easy. But worthwhile doing.

After a year of intense training, it was my turn to stand in front of a group of expectant individuals and try and help them in their pursuit of learning, growing, and adapting.

I left full time classroom teaching in 2000 and now as an Executive Master, what is the one thing in my life I miss? Being with a class of children and having that trusting relationship with them.  Knowing that I am directly, on a day to day basis changing their lives and hopefully for the better.

I am proud to have been a teacher and say without hesitation that there is no more important, no more satisfying, and no more challenging job in the world. Thanks dad!

Gratitude to My Teachers

I have been a teacher throughout my adult life. I enjoyed my own school life and studying history at university was always more than just seeking a gateway to a commercial career. I wanted to be able to talk about the subject I loved every day, and the most obvious route from there was into teaching. I have been privileged to teach at some of the finest schools in the UK and, since 2013, here in China.

Becoming a teacher was not part of my plans as I grew up, though. There are no teachers in my family, and my father was very surprised when I told him of my plans to train as a teacher. In fact, he said he thought I would last just 6 months in my first job before I got fed up and tried something else. But teaching has made me. Working with lively young minds has given me a sense of purpose and fulfilment that I had not found in other opportunities and it has rewarded me with a career rich in new opportunities, challenges and great fun. I have never really wanted to do anything else.

I had plenty of teachers in my own background who inspired me. Teachers like Mr Crawford, who taught me English and history when I first went to senior school and bred in me a lifelong love of reading. Or Mr Noble, who taught French and coached the senior football team as well as showing me that teachers could laugh with their pupils, not just at them. These were teachers who stood out. To me, the most important teachers are those who respond to the individual needs of their pupils, who light a spark that can burn far beyond the time in the classroom. Young people always remember their time in school, and for me it is those teachers who made the difference.

All teachers, I think, aspire to be remembered by their former pupils, but inevitably that cannot be the case. Ultimately, it is the teachers who believed in their pupils; who helped them to work towards their goals; who shared in their academic ambition; and who supported and challenged them to keep going, despite the difficulties – these are the ones who live longest in the memory.

纵观国内应试教育,单拿孩子学习的自我驱动力来说,现下许多孩子依旧处于:‘老师布置什么任务,他便完成什么任务’‘老师安排怎么复习,他才知道怎么复习’的一种被动式学习状态,很少具有主动性;而具备学习的自我驱动力是指:孩子对于学习源于一种自发的状态,在这种状态下,他可以驱动自我对未知知识进行探求;

My 6th Grade English Teacher

Among the several memorable teachers from my school days, my 6th Grade English teacher, Mrs. Gettier, comes to mind often as the person most responsible for my love of writing.

Mrs. Gettier had a fearsome reputation as a strict teacher. Honestly, I can’t remember which stories or books we read that year, but I have distinct memories of the month of February, which was dreaded by the students as the month of daily essays.

Each day we would arrive in class awaiting the teacher’s announcement of the theme of the day.

These were essays in imaginative writing rather than exposition or argumentation, and we would always, as I recall, have a chance to rewrite them at home following Mrs. Gettier’s feedback.

One day Mrs. Gettier stunned the class as she said not a word but simply crumpled a piece of paper. Students raised their hand to ask the topic of the day.

She shook her head and once again took a piece of paper and crumpled it in her hand. It was up to us to construct a story from that simple gesture.

Once again, I have no recollection of what I wrote that day, but the repeated exercise of writing to a prompt of the imagination, with constructive feedback coming from the teacher the next day, contributed perhaps even more to my love of writing than that same teacher’s clear and firm lessons in grammar.

It even turned out that the stern Mrs. Gettier had a gentle touch, making the occasional personal appreciative comment on her reports.

And writing daily essays at age 11 made it easy for me as a head of school to write weekly messages to my school community.

When three walk together, there is a teacher.

Every year for Teachers’ Day, I think about all of the outstanding people in my life who have helped me along the way. I was born into an international teaching family. My parents both have been educators since before I was born; my mom is an English teacher, while my father is a professor of education. In generations past, my maternal grandmother was an interior design instructor at a small college and authored a book on the subject, while my great-grandmother taught music in a kindergarten and then played the piano at community events. Four generations later, I’m a principal of the Beijing Foreign Studies University International Curriculum Centre, so I am standing on the shoulders of my ancestors who came before me and paved the road.

In addition to my parents and grandparents, I have had many outstanding teachers in my life who encouraged and influenced me. In elementary school, Ms Mooney showered me with love and respect helping me fit in and find friends. In high school, Ms Clement was extremely patient teaching me chemistry despite my inability to figure out the chemical reactions. At university, Dr Saari’s vast knowledge of Chinese history and culture inspired me to live and work here as an adult. Finally, in my doctoral program Dr Kitalong supported my research and writing pushing me to complete my PhD.

Here are some of the many things that the great teachers in my life have taught me. Education is process of translating what is written in books into a way of life. Education is not a series of schools one attends but rather a manner of thinking about the world and a way of living in the world. Every human being has gifts to offer the world; teachers are the people who help us look into ourselves to discover and develop our talents. Finally, the words of wisdom that I keep closest to my heart as I move through my day as a principal are these:

"Regard man as a mine rich in gems of inestimable value. Education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom." ~ Bahá’u’lláh

Thus, on this Teachers’ Day, I think of all of the amazing teachers in my past, but I am also very grateful for all of the dedicated teachers in my life now working with me at Beijing Foreign Studies University International Curriculum Centre. A school is a learning community where each member helps teach the others. As the old Chinese saying goes: when three walk together, there is a teacher.

In my life I have been fortunate to be inspired by many great teachers. They have encouraged me when I faced challenges, inspired me when I needed to dream, supported me when I needed to grow, and celebrated with me when I achieved something new.

Great teachers have known how much to give and how much to hold back. They have known when to push and when to rest, and they have always believed in my capacity to learn new things.

As the Head of School at SIS I continue to learn from great teachers and appreciate how skilled my colleagues must be. Today our teachers must be adept at using technology wisely, and understand that they are more successful when they work in teams and with parents. More than ever, the world needs teachers who understand that they teach young people, not a subject or content.

Our world will always need teachers who can build the problem solvers and the creative, curious and passionate leaders of tomorrow.

On behalf of all of us who have been inspired and supported to grow, I wish all of my teacher colleagues the very best on Teacher’s Day.

Education is best seen as a transformative process. As such, teachers are those who take on the task of transforming our world. Education allows us to grow and change, and then in turn, we use that education to bring about change in the world. Successful teachers empower their students to be the leaders of positive change.

The best teachers light a spark in their students which grows into a passion for creating a better world. Through education, teachers have the power to create a future that is better than any which has come before. Teachers are the brave individuals among us who lead the way. Best wishes for a happy Teacher’s Day!
