防守是指球被击球方球员击打之后，防守方球员阻止球运动或者接住球的行为。防守方球员主要目的是阻止击球员得分和尽快让击球员出局。在比赛场上有许多的防守位置，大致分为（击球员身后侧）和（击球员身前侧）。防守方队员可以用身体的任何部位进行阻止或接住球，但是不可使用任何物品辅助（例如帽子或头盔）。如果有任何类似的违规举动，该球将被判定为无效，并且受到让击球方得到5分的惩罚。
Fielding is act of stopping/collecting the ball after it is stuck by the batter. Main aim of fielders is to stop batters taking run and also contributing in getting them out. There are various positions in field and broadly classified as onside and off side. Fielder can field a ball with any part of his body but cannot take support of any external object (for example cap or hat). If any such help is taken, ball will be declared dead and 5 penalty runs awarded to the batting side.

Various fielding positions
Out of the total 11 players from fielding team, one is wicket-keeper and one bowler, rest 9 players are fielders and occupy different places on the field. Placement of fielders is tactical decision taken by the captain after consulting the bowler.

共同规则
Common rules
守桩员所站位置不能超过桩门。
Wicket keeper cannot field in front of the wickets.
在击球员身后腿侧的扇形范围内，不能站超过两名防守方队员。
No more than two fielders behind square on the batter’s leg side.
任何防守队员不得在投手投出球之后站在边界以外的地方防守。
No fielder can stand on or have any part of his/her over the pitch.
投手助跑时，防守队员之间不可交换位置。
Fielders cannot change their position during bowler’srun-up.
防守队员始终要站在比赛场地界内防守，不可以擅自走出边界再走进来。
Fielders are always required to stay on the field. They cannot position themselves outside boundary line and then walk in.

Power play
1. 比赛开始的前10个回合，30码线外的比赛场地内只允许安排2位防守队员进行防守。
2. 第11至第40回合，可以允许4名防守队员站在30码线外的比赛场地内进行防守.
3. 第41至第50回合，可以允许5名防守队员站在30码线外的比赛场地内进行防守。
1. For the first 10 overs,only 2 fielders are allowed to field out of 30 yard circle.
2. 11 to 40 overs, 4 fielders can field out of 30 yard circle.
3. 41 to 50 overs, 5 fielders can field out of 30 yard circle.
20回合比赛
1. 整场比赛中，最多可允许5名防守队员站在击球员身后侧的场地上进行防守
2. 在前6个回合中，最多可允许有2名防守队员站在30码线外 的比赛场地内进行防守。
3. 前6个回合结束之后，最多可允许5名防守队员站在30码线外的比赛场地内进行防守。
4. 如果防守方队伍在比赛已经正常进行后的第75分钟还未开始第20回合的投球，防守方每完成一个回合，下半场作为击球方时将会减少一个回合的击球数。倘若裁判判断，认为是击球方队员浪费了时间，裁判有权延长75分钟的这一规则限制。
T20
1. Maximum 5 fielders are allowed to field on leg side at any given moment.
2. During first 6 overs, maximum 2 fielders can field out of 30 yard circle.
3. After 6 overs, maximum 5 fielders can field out of 30 yard circle.
4. If fielding team fails to start 20th over within 75th minute of the game, 6 penalty runs are awarded to the batting side for each complete over bowled after 75th minute. If umpire feels that batting team wasted time, he may extend this time.
