自 Lakoff和Johnson(1980)发表《我们赖以生存的隐喻》以来，概念隐喻理论已被广泛用于众多领域中的隐喻表达分析，如文学、政治、经济和教育。但在宗教领域，认知视角的隐喻研究则主要局限于基督教和犹太教的《圣经》，很少涉及其他宗教典籍。

隐喻将始源域的结构、关系、特征和知识映射到目标域之上（Lakoff&Turner 1989:63-64)，两域之间的映射由我们的身体、社会和文化经验促成，具有系统性、单向性和局部性等特点（ Lakoff 1993:24 ）。我们可以通过语言层面的比喻表达回溯存在于我们思维中的隐喻系统。比如，《金刚经》中佛说“汝等比丘知我说法如筏喻者”，这个表达背后存在概念隐喻［修行是（渡河）的旅程］。佛教认为修行者的一生就是从充满苦厄的轮回此岸渡到安乐祥和的涅槃彼岸（Lan 2012:173）。这一概念隐喻在始源域［旅程］与目标域［修行］之间触发了一系列映射，如［轮回］即［起点］，［涅槃］即［终点］，［修行者］即［旅行者］，［佛］即［向导］，［佛法］即［交通工具］，等等。
