40:trilingual

今天要学的词是trilingual。Lingual就是语言的，trilingual就是能说三种语言的。加拿大一所中学的一个学生在不幸的事件中被打死。报导说：那次事件 "...left a bright, trilingual 18 year-old student dead," 使得一个很聪敏，还能说三种语言的学生死亡。

美国人有时很谦虚。有的人说，能说三种语言的，we say they are trilingual。能说两种语言的，we say they are bilingual。只会说一种语言的，we call them American。这当然是个笑话，因为许多美国人都是bilingual。(P：我会说中国话)。还有不少美国人是trilingual，有的甚至还会说四，五种语言呐！今天学的词是trilingual...

今天要学的词组是love affair。Love affair是有关爱的事吧？嗨，有那么说的吗？Love affair就是恋爱，或热爱。巴格达一条充满了书店和文具店的著名街道现在空无一人。报导说："The street was known for love affair with books," 那条街以前是以热爱书籍而闻名。

这说明love affair不一定是指恋爱。你可以说，他热爱唱卡拉OK -- his love affair with karaoke; 她热衷于种花养草 -- her love affair with gardening。至于恋爱嘛，we all like happy endings -- 我们都喜欢结局美好。可是你千万不要把love这个词省略，因为你要是说he had an affair, 那就是说他瞒着妻子在外面有外遇。那可麻烦了！今天学的词组是love affair..

今天要学的词是incompatible。Incompatible就是两样东西不相容的、矛盾的。罗马教皇在讲话中除了引用引起争论的那句话外。他还说："Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul," 暴力跟上帝和人的本质是不相容的。

Incompatible这个词用处非常多。我发现我买的软件和我的电脑配不上。The software I bought is incompatible with my computer。另一件伤心事是John 和Mary要离婚，because they are incompatible, 因为他们互不相容，老有矛盾。哎，让我们把incompatible这个词前面的in去掉，成为compatible，那不就什么问题都没有了吗？今天学的词是incompatible...
