The Environmental Engineering program in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Vanderbilt University is seeking applicants for 2021 Fallenrollment in the M.S. and PhD programs. The four major research areas in theprogram include (1) Water Resources, Quality, and Treatment; (2) Environmental Materials and Materials Durability; (3) Nuclear Environmental Engineering; and (4) Resilience and Sustainability. Examples of specific research areas and the corresponding faculty members include:
Prof.Florence Sanchez : Multiscale materials performance and durability. Sanchez’s group primarily focuses on the durability, resilience, and development of sustainable and more-durable infrastructure materials with reduced environmental impact. PhD candidates with interest in computational atomistic modeling and/or microstructural characterization of materials are encouraged to apply. Candidates should have abackground in civil engineering, chemical engineering, or materials science.Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Prof.David Kosson: Nuclear processing and waste management, contaminant mass transport applied togroundwater, soil, sediment and waste systems including leaching assessment and methods, management of residuals from energy production, and environmental remediation. Prof. Kosson is theprincipal investigator for the Consortium for Risk Evaluation with Stakeholder Participation (CRESP) which carries out multidisciplinary, multi-university research to advance cost-effective, risk-informed cleanup of the nation'snuclear weapons production facility waste sites and cost-effective,risk-informed management of current and potential future nuclear sites andwastes (www.CRESP.org). Prof.Kosson’s team also supports development of US EPA’s Leaching Environmental Assessment Framework (https://www.epa.gov/hw-sw846/leaching-environmental-assessment-framework-leaf-methods-and-guidance ). Applicantsfor M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are sought.
Prof.Jesus Gomez-Velez: Environmental flow and transport. Gomez-Velez’s lab studies the hydrology, geomorphology, and biogeochemistry of landscapes and river systems, and theirlinks with humans and ecosystems. This year, Gomez-Velez’s lab is expected torecruit three Ph.D. students and one postdoctoral scientist. These positions will contribute to our ongoing efforts to improve understanding of the fate and transport of nutrients, salts, and plastics along river corridors from local tocontinental scales. These efforts integrate field experiments, data mining of large physical and biogeochemical datasets, and new physics-based models for transport in river networks. We will give preference to applicants with aquantitative background and experience in programming and GIS. The successful candidates are expected to collaborate with partners from multiple universities within the United States and Europe. The postdoctoral position has ananticipated start date of January 2021, and applicants should email a CV and aone-page statement of past and present research goals to Dr. Jesus D.Gomez-Velez (jesus.gomezvelez@vanderbilt.edu).Link: https://gomezvelezlab.com
Prof.Shihong Lin: Water treatment, desalination, and interfacial science. Lin’s group isprimarily interested in advancing water treatment and desalination viaenhancing fundamental understanding and developing novel process and materials. This year the Lin group is expected to recruit 1-2 PhD students to work on projects related to membrane-based processes. Ideal candidate should have a background in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or material science. Applicants witha M.S. degree would receive priority in consideration, although exceptional undergraduate seniors are also encouraged to apply.Link: http://www.shihonglin.net
The deadline for submitting an application that would guarantee full considerationis Dec. 1st, 2020. Applicants should have earned a B.S. or M.S degree upon matriculation. The preferred backgrounds depend on the research area and area stated in the above descriptions. All PhD students will receive full financial aid including tuition, competitive stipend, and benefits. Interested students please apply to the graduate school directly (https://apply.vanderbilt.edu/apply/).Inquiries regarding specific projects should be addressed to the respective faculty member.
General inquiries should be addressed to Jacqueline White (jacqueline.k.white@vanderbilt.edu), the Graduate Program Coordinator of the department. Please note that GRE scoresare not required this year due to COVID19.
