Dear colleagues,
I am writing this letter to all of my colleagues and friends at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China to express my continued sympathy and support for you at this difficult time. I hope that my letter finds you and your families well and in good spirits despite the current situation in China with the coronavirus.
While I know our UNNC Provost Professor Nick Miles and his team are doing everything they can to keep the campus safe by strict adherence to the guidance issued by the regional authorities, I can only imagine the concern that many of you will be feeling while observing the measures to restrict transmission off-campus and in your neighbourhoods.
I want you to know that your University stands with you, our colleagues - as well as our students and the people of China - and we will continue to support you throughout this time.
The decision to postpone further the opening of the Ningbo campus will, I fully appreciate, present practical challenges in delivering teaching off-campus through digital and other methods. Your colleagues and partners in the UK and Malaysia stand ready to support this in any way we can.
As much as our University is challenged by the global problem of coronavirus, I am struck that it is also home to some of the world’s leading virologists, epidemiologists and life scientists who may offer at least part of the solution
Our staff and students in the UK are fundraising to support the people of the city of Ningbo through donations via justgiving.com, and I know that our student societies in Ningbo are contributing financially and personally to support initiatives in the city.
If there is therefore a positive lesson to draw from this dreadful situation, it is this - whether we are in China, Malaysia or the UK, Nottingham is part of a global community and our colleagues are all working together in the interests of that community.
I do hope for the swiftest conclusion to these difficult circumstances. In the meantime, I wish you and your loved ones good health and all strength and good fortune.
With my very best wishes, Shearer
Professor Shearer West
Vice-Chancellor
