Attach Your Foreign Credit Card to WeChat Pay

Last month Wechat published a news release about an update to their WeChat pay service that finally allows international users to attach a foreign credit card to your WeChat pay account. This is a huge benefit to expats and tourists who have international credit cards but aren’t able to use them regularly in China since many shops do not accept credit card transactions. So we thought it could be useful to show you how to go through the process of adding an international credit card to your Wechat pay account.

Luckily, this process is incredibly easy. It is nearly the same process you need to follow to add your Chinese bank card to your WeChat account with a few small differences.

Step 1 – Open WeChat and navigate to your Profile (the “Me” section) and then Click on Wallet

Step 2 – Click on Cards.

Step 3 – Select + Add Bank Card

Step 4 – If you have already set up another payment method, enter your Payment Verification Code that you created when binding your Chinese card to the account.

Step 5 – Enter the Cardholder and Card Number information into the appropriate fields. You must manually input the number for your foreign credit card.

(Note: You will notice if you have already entered a Chinese bank card that your name is automatically filled in. If this doesn’t EXACTLY match your credit card name, then you will need to contact your credit card company and get them to make it match the name used by your bank in China the way it is entered. All Caps may be necessary.)

Step 6 – (For people in China with a Chinese phone number) The system will not automatically detect your card type; therefore, you must first scroll all the way to the bottom and select either Visa/MasterCard/American Express/JCB depending on which type of credit card you have.Step 7 – Then you have to input your CVV code and expiry date followed by the billing address. Accept the user agreement and click “Next” to finish the process.

Done. Now you can use your foreign credit card on WeChat.

There are a few notes though about the rules that affect using foreign credit cards.

1)      You can only make payments on WeChat at business locations with Wechat pay.

2)      You will be able to use this attached card to pay for things in Wechat services, such as train tickets.

3)      You cannot transfer money to friends with a credit card. (Many people use just their personal Wechat account for excepting payment at small shops and restaurants, so paying them won’t work. Try paying before you order or make sure to have some cash on hand, in case).

4)      You are not allowed to send a Hongbao (“Red Packet”).

5)      Many people are noticing there is a difference in exchange rate, which is probably attributed to a fee that is charged for using your credit card at each transaction.

Having Issues Linking Your Card?

So, you’ve double-checked your name, passport number and registered phone number, but it’s still not going through. It could be that you are not entering it exactly how your bank has entered your information. Try all possible versions of your name, including all uppercase, lowercase and with or without spaces. If it’s still a no-go, you may need to visit your bank and ask them to print a form with your information exactly as they’ve entered it. Be sure to take your passport when you go to request this information.
