Recently a survey conducted by the Thomson Reuters Foundation has ranked India as the world's most dangerous country for women. News about it was published widely worldwide by International media and extensively shared on social media. Even lot of articles both in english and mandarin were published by several popular wechat official accounts. 

最近，汤森路透基金会进行的一项调查显示，印度是世界上最危险的女性国家。 有关它的新闻在全球范围内由国际媒体广泛发布，并在社交媒体上广泛分享。 甚至许多英文和普通话的文章都是由几个流行的微信公众号发布的。

The Thomson Reuters Foundation is the London-based charitable arm of Thomson Reuters. Technically, Thomson Reuters is a Canadian company after its takeover by Canada’s Thomson family. But as a news gathering business, Reuters remains a British company run independently from London. This means ownership has little or no influence on the Foundation’s work.

This is a screenshot from the Reuters website. If it were not for the header ‘India’ on the picture I had absolutely no reason to imagine the woman was Indian. Headscarves are worn here for religious purposes and to protect oneself from pollution.

Most articles published recently claiming India as most dangerous country for women conveniently forget to mention that this survey is based on perception of some 500 individuals (who exactly are these individuals? we don't know), No data or facts has been taken into consideration. A survey among few hundred intellectuals was done and India was labelled worldwide as most dangerous country for women.

I know India is no paradise for women, we have problem of Rape, Domestic Violence, Female Infanticide, Dowry etc., nor do i believe that comparing rape cases with other countries who may have higher crime rate makes India look any better. But i am against tarnishing country image worldwide based on opinion of few hundred individuals.

Rape is heinous crime and i strongly believe, culprit deserve nothing less than capital punishment for it. Recently, Indian government introduced death penalty of child rapist.

India is second most populous country in the world. If only look at number of crimes then no wonder India will top the list. But if check facts in terms of reported rapes per 100,000 people, the West has a huge lead. Of Course western media will conveniently ignore it.

Sexual violence rates per 100,000 people, 2010-2012. Sexual violence means rape, attempted rape and sexual assault of any form, that was reported. United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime states only 11% of sexual assaults are reported.

While India has a reported rape rate of 1.8, it is 63 for Sweden, 28 for Australia, 27 for the US, 19 for Norway and 17 for the England. Even if a great number of rapes in India go unreported for a variety of reasons (from shame to intimidation), and the figure for India is doubled, trebled or quintupled, it still won’t come anywhere near the Western average.

Now the country (United Kingdom) which always claims India is a rapist country have rape rate of 19.1 while India has 1.8, yet they call India a rapist country.

Still, Indians are shaming India at a global stage labeling our own country as 'Country of Rapists'

India is ranked 94th out of 118 countries surveyed, YET, INDIA IS THE RAPE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD.

I really feel very heart broken when my friends in China say to me that they really wanna visit and experience India but are scared about their safety since lot of rape happens there.

So does these survey matter? Actually, it does - because it shows India has lost the battle of perceptions. And sometimes, perceptions do matter. It tarnish the country's image worldwide & have a negative effect the tourism industry. India will struggle for decades to convince the world that it's not hostile territory for the female gender.

This is not to imply that the lower figures make any incident of rape less brutal. But the gap between the perception of violence and the actual occurrence of the threat has the potential to alter how women act. 

Yes, India as a country has miles to go in terms of women's rights, gender equality and modern thinking.

 Yes, women safety is one of the biggest issues plaguing the nation. Yes there are rape cases in india and we are shameful of that every single day. Yes, we need to do whatever can be done to ensure that the women in our country don't have to think twice before stepping out. But, in our fight for a safer nation, we've oppressed our women even more, pushing them into a bubble of fear. India isn't as unsafe as the media portrays it to be. It is time we stop being so scared all the time and instead encourage our women to live freely, step out when they want to, wear what they feel like. Sensationalizing rapes in India is clearly not going to help. Let's focus on how to deal with them.
